Are you thinking if you go 1 kW over your entire bill is at the tier 2 rate?

Whatever you go over, yeah.

So you have to be very conscious of your usage with an EV, if you don’t want to go over. If you do, hydro gets expensive.

BC Hydro says a single baseboard heater uses 36kwh every 24 hours. That’s $50 at tier two @ 8hrs/day.

This is why people end up with $1000 hydro bills in the dead of winter, if they’re not careful. And we have very mild winters.

It's not that hard, everyone.

Your first 1,350 kwh is the low rate.  Everything above is the higher rate.

A 1,500-watt (1.5 kw) heater x 24 hours is 36 kwh.   That's $5.06 at tier 2.

It can't possibly be $50.

Running a single baseboard heater for 24 hours a day would use 333.49 kWh of electricity, according to BCHydro. That would cost $33.32 per month per unit in British Columbia.

333.49 at 14 cents is $46.70.

Dude I have like, 20 baseboard heaters. In the winter I pay about 500 bucks to bch every 2 months. Supplemented with a gas fireplace, not paying much to fortis. Your math sucks.
Even at step 2, our electricity is pretty cheap. And you only pay that for what you use once you cross the threshold, so it makes very little difference if you have an electric car or not. Just crunch your numbers at 15c if that's a concern.

My math is good, don’t worry about it.

Gas is very efficient and very cheap. If you weren’t heating with gas as your primary/’supplemental’ you’d be paying much, much more.

Speaking of which, I just got my hydro bill. $179, with 217 kWh on tier 2. It’s all because I set one baseboard heater to 12.5C, just to crack on in the dead of night when we had that cold spell around Christmas.

Imagine running 10 at 20C. Ouch.

Edit: oh yeah, I also had a baseboard set to the same temp in a bathroom. And add some LED Xmas lights, of course. The wood stove is awesome at keeping the house nice and warm unless we get to low singles as daytime highs. Then we use baseboard as a supplement.

$500 is super high with a gas fireplace, though. Wow. Do you have issues with drafts, maybe? Or leaks somewhere?

If all your baseboard heaters are actually on 24/7 you’ve left your windows and doors open.

But at the end of the day, the extra you pay is for your car...  You can say it's for heat and the car is less but, the extra billing generated is for your EV.  You measure that increase vs you gas costs...  Easy math.  Don't break it out...

On January 17, Chinese electric vehicle (EV) startup, XPeng, issued an official price drop on its entire product lineup, except for the G9, with a discount of up to 36,000 yuan ($5,310).

To be specific, the original price of the XPeng G3i was 168,900-201,900 yuan ($24,900-29,800), and the current price of the model dropped to 148,900-176,900 yuan ($21,970-26,100). The price of the XPeng P5 came down to 156,900-202,900 yuan ($23,150-29,940) from the original 179,900-225,900 yuan ($26,550-33,340). Meanwhile, the XPeng P7 saw a 30,000-36,000-yuan ($4,430-5,310) decline in price, which stands at 209,900-249,900 yuan ($30,980-36,880) at present. Notably, the price of XPeng’s latest model, the G9, remained unchanged.

In addition, the first owners of cars who ordered the XPeng G3i, P5, and P7 within 2022 are eligible for such New Year rewards as an extended warranty to 10 years/200,000 km, as well as four years of complimentary basic maintenance.

XPeng is not the only automaker in China issuing a price adjustment recently. For instance, Tesla and Huawei-backed AITO both announced their price decrease plan earlier this month.

Also, when we are forced to only use electricity, we should be using heat pumps, not resistive baseboard heaters.  Heat pumps are 3-5x more efficient.

Tesla Is US Brand with Lowest Maintenance Cost for its Cars with 10 years of Use, Model S Is #1

Tesla has become the brand with the lowest maintenance costs for its vehicles in 10 years of use in the US, a study has shown. Model S and X are the cheapest cars to maintain, while Model 3 and Y are #4 and #9 respectively.

The cost of car maintenance is a very important metric when consumers are choosing a car to buy. Regardless of the starting price and segment, some cars are more reliable and economical, while others require significant financial costs for frequent maintenance. CunkerJunker analyzed data on the 185 most common cars in the US that consumers can buy and compiled lists of the best and worst.

Yeah. I have one but it seems only setup for AC. Outlet is upstairs in master, at the top of the house . I actually never tried using it for heat.

Probably works out to less than what you pay overall for heat and I don't have to chop no wood.
Monthly average for all of 2022 was under 100/mo. That includes cooling.

I'm not sure all are duel-use (heat and cool).  I'm no expert though.

It's quite impressive how efficient they are, but of course they are not cheap, either up-front or I suppose ongoing maintenance when they get a few years old.  And I think they start to fail after 10 or 15 years.  Your baseboard heater might last 50 years.
