You Can Now Rent a Tesla for Just $60 a Day

Tesla’s new rental program allows you to experience everything its EVs have to offer without a long-term commitment.

Available at select U.S. stores, the new rental program allows owners to enjoy a Tesla for up to seven days, with daily rates starting at $60. The program offers many other perks, including free charging and a credit if you decide to purchase your own Tesla.

Don’t they record everything being said, and film everything you do?

No, but they can record a variety of things and send them to Tesla, for safety analysis for example if you give permission . Information is also sent  over the air to add upgrades and software update directlly to each car.

One system for example monitors driver attention  and provides a warning if the system has been activated.. The default settting is off for many features after some early complaints.

Oh ok, so it’s not actively recording everything when you go on, say, a test drive?

I just assume a Tesla is constantly recording everything around it, including when parked and you’re walking by.

Probably some database somewhere that has a record of every time Marko has farted in his Tesla. Oh well...

Production of the 2027 Chevy Bolt is officially underway. Assembly began Monday, November 10th, at the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas, with a Chevrolet spokesperson confirming with GM Authority that the first units are now scheduled to reach dealerships this coming January. General Motors pulled the sheets on the next-generation Chevy Bolt last month.

Every EV owner I personally know, is deep underwater on their car loan. That means, what they owe for their brand new vehicle purchase, is well below market value. One instance is $25k underwater for a Model Y.

We still remember when Teslas were a status symbol. But today, they’re the bargain vehicles you can buy on the cheap, and that leads to a lot of charger conflicts as people who can’t afford a comparable gasser choose the EV, fuelled by charging network promises, then realize the hassle and problems a lack of at-home charging poses.

This whole experiment is one of the greatest government-backed scams in modern history.

General Motors GM-N -1.91%decrease
said on Wednesday it will cut U.S. electric vehicle and battery production and 1,200 factory jobs at its EV plant in Detroit, as the automaker responds to a significant slowdown in demand for its battery cars.

The Detroit automaker said it will halt battery cell production at its two U.S. joint-venture battery plants – in Tennessee and Ohio − in January for about six months. It added it will temporarily lay off about 1,550 workers at the factories.

In addition, at the Ohio plant, GM said it will lay off 550 workers indefinitely. GM operates the Ohio plant jointly with South Korea’s LG Energy Solution.

GM said the cuts were “in response to slower near-term EV adoption and an evolving regulatory environment.” GM lobbied Congress and the White House to ease emissions requirements and last month also cut its EV production.

Automakers in the U.S. are backpedaling hard on their EV plans, anticipating a sharp drop in consumer demand following the expiration of a US$7,500 federal tax credit for EV buyers. Some executives and analysts have said EV sales – which exceeded 10 per cent of overall U.S. car sales over the summer – could fall by half in coming months.

Nissan, Jeep-maker Stellantis and other automakers have canceled plans for future electric models. Earlier this month, GM said it was cancelling production of its electric BrightDrop van, citing slow development in the commercial EV van market.

Brutal:

The Elon Musk-headed automaker bagged four spaces in the top 10 list of biggest losers collated by the data crunchers at iSeeCars, and a fourth Tesla also found its way onto the chart.

Including one other brand’s value-shedding model, EVs accounted for five of the 10 cars judged to have shed the biggest percentage of their value in 10 months. And that’s despite electric vehicles only accounting for 3.3 percent of the 1- to 5-year-old used market.

All five EVs on the list fell significantly more than the average for used electric vehicles, which dropped just 4.8 percent. By contrast, used internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles actually gained in value slightly, up 5.2 percent on average over the same 12-month period.

Remember when the EV boosters told us soon (back then, several years ago) you’d be hard pressed to even have a buyer for your gas vehicle?

Indeed. Lots and lots of people getting caught up in the hype still, buying vehicles new that will shed value crazy fast. Tesla isn’t helping by constantly repricing their vehicles. Corollas and RAV4s hold their value well, I think. Most/all Toyotas do, usually.

I would encourage anyone in the market for an affordable vehicle to consider a used EV now, especially if you live in a SFD or townhome with its own garage or outlet for charging. You can score some sweet deals currently.

All brand new vehicles lose a good chunk of their value the moment you drive it off the lot. Standard accounting says 20-30% in the first year.

Ouch, it’s not quite that bad.

I think the standard is 15%. Over two years it’ll be closer to 30% for a lot of makes and models, which is to be expected. Lots can happen over two years. Teslas plummeted in value, by comparison. Friend’s wife bought a MY for close to $100k, then the next week tesla dropped its price. I don’t think she’d even get for $40k for it and it’s only a few years old. Maybe worth $35k now, maybe, but probably not.

Now, a couple of years ago values of new cars were rising after they drove off the lot. You ordered an F250, then the minute it arrived the dealership offered you $7,500 to walk away. If you bought it, there’d be a guy willing to pay you $20k, to cover your taxes and fees, and beat the dealer’s profit offer. Good times.

Remember the cYbErTRuCk? Man, those things sunk people’s finances faster than a federal government car plant investment.

Ya, certain vehicles depreciate more. I would expect EVs to do so due to the battery issues. This article also says they crash the most. https://www.iseecars...eir-value-study

But a vehicle is NOT an appreciating asset. Personally if I wanted a new vehicle I would probably lease it. I have had good success buying good used cars.

Actually I did own one car that appreciated. My Westy! But it ate cash along the way….

I’ve heard cybertrucks are not selling, with the used market essentially dead. Lotta people lost a lot of money on those meme trucks.

Anyone follow a fellow named George Saliba on socials? Wham bam rock’em sock’em car salesman, usually higher end stuff and sometimes super high end stuff, but he’s got a good schtick going and is fun to watch for a few minutes. Came across a reel today where he basically laughed at someone trying to unload a cyber truck with him.

For a while he was buying every one he could get, but not anymore.

Swedish automaker Volvo has canceled a five-year-old contract with Luminar, the latest escalation in an increasingly ugly brawl between the lidar sensor company and its biggest customer.

The fight is happening during an existential moment for Luminar. The company recently defaulted on several of its loans. While it’s working with those lenders on a resolution, Luminar has warned investors it may have to declare bankruptcy.

To stave that off, Luminar recently laid off 25% of its staff and is trying to sell itself — or parts of itself — to potential buyers. One of them is Luminar founder Austin Russell, who resigned from the CEO role in May during an ethics inquiry. Luminar is also being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission, recent filings reveal.

“Volvo Cars has made this decision to limit the company’s supply chain risk exposure and it is a direct result of Luminar’s failure to meet its contractual obligations to Volvo Cars,” the automaker said in a statement to TechCrunch. Luminar did not respond to a request for comment.

Volvo is not just a Luminar customer. The two companies have spent much of the last decade working together. Volvo invested in Luminar and helped the Florida-based startup get into some of its first production vehicles.
