Not too many threads on all the Hyundai engine fires either: https://www.reuters....s-idUSKCN1QH2EB

You'll need quite the solar farm to keep your home and your vehicle(s) fully juiced up.

And even then, hydro will just tack on a levy and you'll have no choice but to pay it, like lower mainland residents who don't drive but are paying a transit tax via their electrical bill.

14 panels on the roof, energy efficiencies (insulation, LED bulbs, lights off when not in room, etc.) = no hydro bill and i am selling power back to hydro every year at 9.9 cents kWhr...whoops - forgot hours spent on the woodpile and woodstove for heat ;-)

Hey that's pretty good! So you're not using any hydro, at all?

we use some, but produce more than we consume. we are grid tied and use more in winter but produce vast excess through spring through fall...hydro bill was between $50-60/month before panels - never big hydro users - , after panels no bill plus net credit annually

Are you 100% hydro heat and hot water etc included? Specs on house? Cost of solar installation? More details please! Possible new thread on energy efficient housing?

Interesting data out of Ontario after they cancelled their (overly generous) $14,000 rebates for electric cars.

As expected, sales dropped by a lot (~75%) in the months after.  With one exception:  Tesla.

Tesla sold 993 vehicles in Ontario July - Sep, and the following 3 months (after expiry of incentives) they sold 1142.

Seems to indicate that Tesla is the only company right now that can produce an EV that stands on its own.  The others are still depending on incentives to make the purchase reasonable.

That's pretty good.

Weren't the rebates un-cancelled, but reduced?

hydro - photovoltaic, hot water - single panel on roof (gas backup), woodstove for heat (gas furnace backup seldom use), stove gas. big house - gutted and insulated on purchase 5 yrs. ago, new windows, doors, etc.

solar install was $13K - GIC pays 2%, say $260/yr - hydro bill was $55/month, now $0, plus $300 surplus sale back to BCHydro  - net $700/year or 5.5% roi - (all numbers approximated)

started this as a reply to electric car charge tax, will cross post anything else at https://vibrantvicto...-sources/page-9

BCHydro is still paying 9.9 cents/kWhr, but no longer allow installs that exceed average use - got ours in before the policy change so as there are just the two of us, retired, energy efficient old hippies, we generate more than we use ;-)

There’s a fellow not too far from my mom’s place who installed a fairly large solar panel setup on his roof. It would have come about at around your time frame, so he likely got in before hydro changed the rules.

Very cool that you’re able to swing it. Having a wood stove makes a tremendous difference.

My hydro use is very similar to your former rates, btw, and every appliance is on hydro.

Totally cancelled I believe. Which is quite a shock to the market from $14k to $0.

People said similar things about Apple and then they became the stable company.

But Apple was 50/50 for many years in the early 90's.

I am guessing that you did the install yourself. Can't see an installed system being $13K if you had to have an electrician and other trades come in to do the work.

BTW, you are buying the wrong GIC's if all you can get is 2% :-)

5kW grid tie system (all necessary parts) is $9000 from Wego solar up island. You can get a better price if buying in bigger quantities. Leaves $5k for labour which seems doable.

Saw my first iPace downtown today.  Nice looking vehicle.  Not great for road trips due to slow charging and lack of chargers, but for island + Vancouver it's fine.   Didn't get a picture but it was this grey color with slightly less ridiculous wheels..  $89k - $122k in Canada

2019 CANADIAN UTILITY VEHICLE OF THE YEAR

"This is the first time that an all-electric vehicle has won AJAC's top honour. Only one vehicle in Canada can win this prize, and it's a sign of the times that the 2019 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year uses no gasoline whatsoever, and consumes only electricity as its fuel."
– Mark Richardson, President, AJAC
