Has anybody here been in a vehicle that engages braking for you when it decides that you are going to get in an accident? You are driving merrily along and all of a sudden the brakes slam on scaring the hell out of you, for no reason.

Everybody I know that has this feature shut it off after the first time this happens, same with the lane keeping technology, on a quiet street with no traffic you decide to slide over into the other lane without activating your turn signal, wham, it pulls you back into your lane, another instant disable.

And we will all have private aircraft that pick us up at the door and take us where we want to go...oh, wait, that was the Jetson's.

No but one might deliver your groceries...

Volvo, one of the global automotive leaders in autonomous development, with a pilot program underway on Swedish roads, will be the first customer to use the Nvidia supercomputers in its cars, Huang said. He emphasized the computers were already outperforming humans in recognizing images and that humans, responsible for roughly 94 percent of all car crashes....
With cars now capable of painting such a detailed 360-degree view of the world around them, "the rear-view mirror is history," Huang said.

By increasing its fleet of Ford Fusion hybrid testers from 10 to 30 vehicles, it should lead to a significant jump in data for the company's Smart Mobility program. The vehicles will continue to be operated on both public roads in Michigan and at the University of Michigan's 32-acre MCity testing facility. Test operations will also be conducted on the roads of California and Arizona, the company confirmed.

This is why Tesla opened up it's patents....

The Gigafactory is being created to enable a continuous reduction in the cost of long range battery packs in parallel with manufacturing at the volumes required to enable Tesla to meet its goal of advancing mass market electric vehicles. The Gigafactory will be managed by Tesla with Panasonic joining as the principal partner responsible for lithium-ion battery cells and occupying approximately half of the planned manufacturing space

No and I haven't heard of them slamming on the brakes for no reason.

Well you are travelling down the highway in the slow lane and you want to pass the car in front of you. Unfortunately there is another left lane hog pacing beside you. You see a gap opening up that you can slide into so you increase your speed to get by the pace car and slide left into the slot in the other lane. Just as you are about to complete the maneuver your car decides you are going to hit the car in front of you so it slams on the brakes.

Owners manual out, see section on how to disable auto brakes, ah, there you go, done.

And the car says "Chill Dave, do you really need to risk it to make it to the red light one car ahead?"

^ That is cool, but privately owned at your door? Not gonna happen, that's a disaster waiting to happen. It works when there is a few in a city. It doesn't scale.

Flying human personal transport won't happen for a long time, if ever.     Forget about going to Costco though, you will get all that stuff delivered to you via drone or autonomous car.

Well, whoever gets the first autonomous car in Victoria come and pick me up and I will buy you a coffee.

That doesn't sound like much now but coffee will be about $50 a cup then.

Awesome feature that's sure to impress many, as demonstrated in this video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-Ofhek3QDQ

Seriously though, I just don't see the point

You can have a much smaller spot to store your car in and still be able to get in and out. space is expensive. Why dedicate so much so you can get in and out of your car in your garage... with this you can have a slot for the car and the rest of the space can be used foe other things. I see so many people who don't park their cars in the garage. They are to cluttered...

It will be interesting to see if an autonomous car can do the Nurburgring faster than their human counterpart

Then you need a housekeeper and some shelving.  Not a Tesla :)

In the context of current garages, yes.

However, think to the future. Imagine a time when your garage is just a slot in the house that fits the car, and nothing else. You hit a button or say a short phrase, and the wall pops open, the car drives out, ready for you. The rest of the time, its out of sight, no worries. Heck, you could have it in a wash chamber that cleans it as well (not that it will be needed with the way nanotechnology is coming along; dirty vehicles will be a thing of the past).

Edited of course...

That sounds like a pretty crappy garage to do things in... like a brake job on the car or building things in :/
