(CNN)Clouds of smoke continued to waft Friday from a 63-floor luxury hotel in Dubai that was engulfed in flames on New Year's Eve.

Firefighters had battled the blaze raging at the swanky Address Downtown Dubai hotel late Thursday as a spectacular New Year's fireworks display lit up the night sky nearby.

The fire started around 9:30 p.m. (12:30 p.m. ET) Thursday and burned well into the early hours of Friday. Witnesses said they heard explosions as the blaze ate away at one side of the towering structure in the heart of downtown Dubai.

The fire broke out at about 21:30 local time (17:30 GMT) and appeared to engulf much of the building, a five-star hotel and apartment complex, within 10 minutes.

The fire could weaken the building to the point of collapse, but the party in Dubai seems to be still going on.

Don't worry, they will have a replacement built by the end of January!

Or sooner if the Chinese build it.

My hunch is that someone in the Address Hotel had their supply of fireworks prematurely go off.

This is not the first high-rise fire in Dubai.  Just 10 months ago there was another large fire at the 79 story "Torch" apartment tower.

Officials claim that the fire did not spread to the inside of the building.  The speculation is that most of Dubai's 250 or so towers are ALL built with combustible exterior cladding - some kind of "thermo plastic core".  New building codes put into place in 2012-2013 require external sprinklers on new buildings.

From today, still smoldering:

A fire without a litany of introduced accelerants will never cause the collapse of a properly built concrete structure.

The fire was in the exterior cladding, the inside of the building was sprinklered. Since 2012, all new construction had to be sprinklered on the exterior as well. You would think it would be cheaper just to use non-flammable cladding.

Second time.

A blaze tore through Dubai's Torch Tower for the second time in two years as firefighters frantically worked to save the 84-story building.

It might REALLY be time to rename this building.

Exterior panels again.

Time to amend their building codes as well.
