i'm sort of thinking of symbols of victoria, or something about their design or construction, or maybe it was controversial in its day, not just who lived in them, not just the fanciest, and bigger isn't necessarily better
- legislature & empress hotel, probably the two most recognisable buildings in town. both 'made in bc' not long after bc became a province
- 602 courtney st (@ government), first brick building in bc(?)
- 2564 heron st aka tod house, oldest house on the continent west of ontario
- belmont building, was cutting-edge in just about every way when built
- city hall, the modernist addition doesn't try to copy the original building
- congregation emmanu-el, another pre-confederation building, strong expression of jewish heritage
- bastion square & surrounding buildings
- esquimalt graving dock, still the biggest on the west coast & still gets a lot of use
- ogden point breakwater
etc. actually there are so many maybe there could be 50
