Very true. The have a lot to do before any nails are hammered in. The roads need to be laid out and the services such as water, sewer and storm need to be put in.

The site across the street where the Cherish is going was excavated 2 level into the till

Some test drill sites in the Langford Plain area have sown bedrock at 90mtres in some area other ares they never did reach it

My wife is the new Community Services Manager for the still under construction Cherish/seniors site so last night we went out to meet friends for drinks & dinner at Original Joe's, with a detour down Jacklin to see the new Cherish building. Its sited directly across from what will be the Belmont Market.

Crikey! That (BM) is a big development and should be quite impressive once complete. Certainly as mentioned there is lots of equipment on site. Quite the contrast from the Jacklin Road neighborhood in the late 70's/early 80's which was "Deliverance" personified, complete with the background dueling banjo sound track....

Driving around the area, including Langford Lake and down through Goldstream "village" later after dinner really drove home how much development really is happening out there.

Weekend Update:

Old Belmont site gets a new look in Langford

Work is underway for a new muncipial road across the site

The corner of Jacklin Road and Jenkins Avenue will look quite different in the near future.

Work is underway for road improvements that are part of the Belmont Market development slated for the site that once housed the old Belmont secondary building in Langford.

“We’ll have signs going up in that area next week,” said Michelle Mahovlich, Langford’s director of engineering.

Improvements to the area, required by the City during the rezoning process, will see owner Sobeys Inc. responsible for constructing a new municipal road that will run through the site, starting near the Sooke School District’s office on Jacklin Road, loosly following the Galloping Goose Trail and connecting with Jenkins Avenue roughly where the old student parking entrance was.

Word on the street is that Sobeys sold this site, but a Thriftys is still planned for there. If so it was pretty hush hush.  Does the collective know anything?

It's highly unlikely they sold it. Sobeys has a a tendency to like to own property through their real estate arm.

Sobeys has transferred the land to its REIT, so it's still in the family so-to-speak.

I'm hoping they are planning to put in some EV chargers, WestShore Mall has none. In fact the only mall in all of the WestShore with an EV charger is Colwood Corners by London Drugs. Sad!

Im hoping a rethink of all the surface parking on the site. Also hoping more residential ends up on top of the commercial portions to give it a more mixed use feel, communal even.

Jacklin Road will close to traffic from February 1st through late May or early June between Jenkins Avenue and the Galloping Goose Regional Trail crossing. The road closure and upgrades are part of the Belmont Market development.

The nearly completed Division Avenue will serve as a detour around Jacklin Road once it closes to through-traffic next February between Jenkins Avenue and the School District 62 head office/Galloping Goose Regional Trail. Jacklin Road will close for a period of four months as crews upgrade utilities and improve the streetscape.
