So no one currently housed at Mt. Edwards under the age of 50 will be allowed to stay.

Once the property is rezoned, they can do anything they want. Who in City Hall is going to challenge them after the fact?

They will not be doing any seismic upgrades. Plus all the tenants will stay when they eventually decide to remove the asbestos from the 3rd floor.

I am not saying you are wrong, but that is not what the proponent (CitySpaces Consulting, on behalf of the BC Rental Housing Corporation) is telling the city in their application for rezoning:

  • All residents will be over the age of 50...
  • Illicit substance use will not be permitted on the premises...
  • With a target of December 31, 2017, all current Mount Edwards’ residents who do not meet the new requirements will be relocated to other housing projects appropriate for their needs...
  • All residents will under go the VAT screening process to ensure there is no history of violence, or current problematic substance use

Sorry, which part are you questioning? I was told by a BC Housing employee that all tenants will stay while the asbestos is removed.

Only that by the end of this year no one under 50 (allegedly) will be resident at Mt. Edwards, whether or not they currently reside there.

I don't either. They have done nothing but lie to parents and neighbours all along. This continued at the CALUC.

One good thing about this project is their security guard's hair. It's absolutely amazing. I hope he gets paid more for the community outreach work his hair is doing because I've heard several neighbours also comments on it.

There won't be any more security.

Cool aid and BC Housing are pulling a real bait and switch scheme on the school and neighbours. They want people to agree to a permanent facility based on the current format of a maximum number of 38 hand picked people (as much as this is possible), three times the planned staff and outside professional security when in reality they plan to fit in almost 100 with no security. Very sleazy...

CItySpaces has provided revised plans, and a letter responding to City comments to date. Apparently the City has quite the laundry list of demands, including road dedication on Rockland and heritage designation for the building. A housing agreement will be registered on Title to enforce certain tenant restrictions.

This is going to the CoTW next week.  The new plans will limit the housing to seniors only and there will be no tolerance for substance abuse on site.

...The new plans will limit the housing to seniors only...

Isn't that contrary to Victoria City Council's intention to disallow any restrictions in regards to local housing? i.e. the ability for stratas to impose rental and/or age restrictions? Do taxpayer funded properties not have to play by the same rules as private property owners?

You are misinformed. It will be 50 years +, hardly seniors. Drugs are still totally fine but Coolaid say they will not place intravenous drug users there, but former ones are ok. Any other drugs ok. They also know that the relapse is high, and that the neighbours will never be able to prove anything since they don't have access to records, and when they have had proof in the past, Coolaid just denied it. It's a very sleazy and nasty deal.

That's what I was kind of thinking too.  If they are hard to house then they are hard to house.  Not many 65+ers are hard to house.

With these changes it'll likely pass.

Important facts not mentioned in the article.

The building will not be seismically upgraded making it a danger to the surrounding buildings.

The residents will be living in the building when the asbestos is finally removed, unlike the recent apartments reno where residents were moved out for their own safety.

The security guard currently patrolling the neighbourhood will be removed.

Cool Aid has no experience running a facility with that many residents.

First it was no illicit drugs, then it was stated that an under control drug addiction would be tolerated. This policy changes almost daily. Now, it is no drugs. How on earth can you enforce this? If they can't use drugs inside the facility for fear of being removed then how likely is it that they will consume their drugs outside?

This is a very slippery slope. The fact that this proposed site is 40 feet from an elementary school and it is still being pushed forward is very troubling, and people who live next to older buildings should be very concerned.

Cool Aid will point to their experience running their seniors facility out in the West Shore.
