Now running radio ads to try to find staff.

Probably no surprise they will have a challenge filling the lower-end jobs.  I suspect the majority of housekeepers do not drive, or at least perhaps live in one-car families.

Some of the disgruntled Empress staff might head over.

When the Aerie Resort was shuttered in the winter of 2009, a Times Colonist editorial lamented the loss of the fabled mountaintop resort, saying that it had helped put Vancouver Island on the world tourism map.

It also expressed hope that Maria Schuster’s resort that opened atop Malahat Drive in 1991 and earned accolades as one of the world’s best would someday regain its status as a symbol of Island elegance.

That day has come. The secluded European-style luxury resort known for fine cuisine, stellar service and stunning 180-degree views of Saanich Inlet, the Olympic Mountains and Mount Baker has been reborn as Villa Eyrie Resort.

Stayed there in 2003.

Two chocolates on the bed when we arrived, and then you get your dinner of one carrot and three peas artistically arranged on a huge plate of drizzel.

No wonder it closed down.

This may explain why there has been so much turnover.

Funny story.

I guess I wasn’t paying attention as I was storming up the Malahat this morning when I spotted a well dressed police officer standing in the middle of the highway pointing to the side of the roadway where his cruiser was parked. I had lots of time to pull over right beside where he was standing. He slowly walked over to the driver’s window when detected a slight glint in his eye.

“Did I screw that up?” I said with a wide smile bordering on laughter for being so stupid.

At which point he matched my wide grin with his, turned the radar gun around, showed me the 105 KPH on the screen and said “25 over the limit going uphill.” All I could do was laugh and say “ You better let me have it then.”

He comes back to the car with the ticket and an even wider grin as says “I did you a favour,” looks at Mrs. Sparky and says “ you are going to love this, this is for your benefit.”

“25 over is a $195 fine, but I have a soft spot for people like you that acknowledge your indiscretion. I am going to charge you $135 which is the lowest I can go under the legislation and don’t forget this is for her benefit.”.....at which time he points at Mrs. Sparky and says “See where I am gong with this?”

“ I smell lunch” I said. At which time he breaks into a full gale of laughter and says “You got it.” We were all laughing loudly at this point.

We were not far from the Eyrie and we had never been before. Absolutely fantastic food and view. I felt better after that.

Something tells me you weren't able to get lunch at the Eyrie for $60.
