Rail fans young and old turned out on April 8th to celebrate 130 years of rail on Vancouver Island.

The heritage streamliner train was brought over from the mainland by West Coast Railway, and a few hundred people bought tickets to ride on one of the three one hour tours.

Ticket proceeds went towards the Nanaimo Travellers Lodge fundraiser to enhance their Eden Gardens, for Compassionate Dementia Care.

No. 4069 built for Canadian National Railways 1952, is seen here at the restored Nanaimo Train Station.

The next tour group waits for the train that is brought back to the station by an engine that was added to the opposite end at Wellington.

Guess the tracks are in decent shape after all. I'd love to see a commuter train run down from Mill Bay into town.

The extra ditch lights on the snoot nose makes me think it is an old BCR unit?

F-Unit sounds like the attitude pretty much all levels of government have taken to preserve the E&N.

The BCR never had F-Units. 4069 spent most of its life with the CPR and when VIA took over in 1978, they added ditch lights to all of their F-units for added visibility.

Sorry...I was meaning the SRY 110.  No wonder I was so confused.....it originally started as a EMD GP9.  Built July 1956 for Northern Pacific, here is what it originally looked like.

Northern merged with 4 railroads to create Burlington Northern.  Burlington hacked the noses off the GP9s and retrofitted them what looks to me like a SD40-2.  This would have happened some time in the mid 70s.  BN sold them to Montana Rail Link, who in turn sold them to Southern Railway of Vancouver Island in 2004.  SRY states it was retired in 2006, which is why I guess it's part of the museum?  Too difficult to bring it back to it's original Norther Pacific state I suppose.
