Coffee with a friend thats fairly connected to Coleman and the Anglican Church...The Sunday service after the statue removal he got lambasted by quite a few parishioners who are/were his base support....

We'll soon know who it is but I hope its not Coleman as he's not a bad guy and is one of the more reasoned minds on council.

Wow you mean the Anglicans do actually have a limit as to how far left they'll be pushed?

I'll be sorry to hear that Coleman is not running again.

He was someone who would really listen to people and didn't seem to have a hidden agenda.

I will bet that the Helps/Isitt/Loveday crowd will play identity politics on this and turn it into a Right wing vs Left wing battle. Profits over people type of rants.....I hope folks see right through that nonsense

I hope voters will be able to see through this type of misrepresentation. As a self-identified leftie, I am strongly leaning towards the newcouncil slate, and many other lefties I know are not supportive of the current regime from what I've seen so far.

Watch and see....she's already playing the victim card / identity politics with her fundraising email where they show examples of some of the more egregious troll comments and are using them to ask for money to help her fight this....

They could probably cut out the middleman and just write the troll comments themselves! That way they could blend in inflammatory comments along with a little campaign PR.

I see the TC today gave them some free press on the matter.

I was going to say "don't give them amy ideas"; however, the cynic in me suspects that this very idea may have already occured to them.

I find Sonia Theroux extremely offensive.  This is more of the same.

Anti-bike lane candidates in other cities have tended to lose. The NPA ran on two elections on an anti-bike message and got spanked by Vision. Only when the housing market went south did Vision start losing support but mostly to parties further left. Seattle also ended up in a fight between two mayoral candidates - one who wanted bike lanes and one who wanted them more. The anti-bike lane candidates all lost in the primary.

Every piece of public polling I seen from any North American city, including Victoria, says that ~60-75% of the population supports more bike lanes.

if I had been polled on this question before the bike lanes were done here in Victoria, I would have been supportive too. I do not support the current city’s approach to bike lanes. They are fiscally irresponsible, and as a cyclist, I don’t want to use them. I much prefer the painted lanes on the side of the road. At least if something gets in my way (like broken glass when I tried the pandora lanes) I can swerve around. They also feels more secure as they follow the rules of the road. As a motorist, I think the « punishment » aspect just wants me to drive more. I refuse to have idéologues that are supposed to work for me, and whose salaries are paid by me, dictate how i should live my life .

Left or Right?

To paraphrase sentiment from the recently departed John McCain, I believe sitting on council in a privilege and councillors should act in a manner that’s best for the city. Personal agendas or party politics or slate driven block voting has no place in municipal governance.

I am appalled that Ben Isitt is cooperating or co-opting a slate so he will have “control” at council. It’s offensive to the city.

Winning will not be dertermined by painting candidates into a corner through labels.

People have tried to do that to me as “right wing”. I howl every time I hear this because those hat know me cannot comprehend that thought.

I’m a pragmatist. My work and volunteerism flies in the face of being right wing.

It just goes to show, people (and I include the Helps’ cabal in that group) demonize their opposition to dehumanize and ridicule. In fact the Helps’ supporters participate in offensive, arrogant and paternalistic attacks all orchestrated while proffering for support of “good people”.

I think this is what bothers me most about many of the current council.

Lots of places have parties running slates of candidates for local governments.  I tend to think we are better off without parties at local level, but it is not like this is some uniquely evil invention by Ben Issitt.

Exactly. Party politics have no place at the local level, because we don't use the Westminster model there. Council should represent different interests -and work together to create the best representative decisions they can to benefit the whole community. I won't vote for any slate.

I think that parties and slates can be different. I look at newcouncil as an example of people who are pooling resources since they are all relative unknowns, as opposed to a party that agrees to vote together on issues along ideological lines.

I don't know, if I was running for council and my good friend was also running, and we shared almost identical ideology and goals, it would make sense to pool our resources.  Local campaigning generally has tiny budgets and it can be quite difficult to get anyone to pay attention.  Sometimes you need to team up with others to have a chance.  Now, having that "party" continue after election into a bloc that demands every member vote the same is silly,  but at the same time voted representatives will often vote predictably with some of their colleagues regardless of public stated party or alliance.  At least when they make it known during the election you know who's bedfellows.

Are people who hold right wing political views not able to volunteer in the capacity that you do, or engage in the work that you do? What is it that you are involved with?

I currently perceive/hope them to be a thoughtful/balanced moderate-left/electable-in-Victoria group that can voice the concerns many have about the current mayor and council, and then outline a realstic plan for how to improve things.

I don’t know where I fit in right /left .
Will I agree with every thing that’s passed ,probably not .
I can live with that .
No more personal agendas please .
I’m on the side of balanced with a huge amount of common sense .
