does staff recommend on rezonings?

Variances, too. I've seen council nix a staff recommendation but I have also seen projects that were approved despite a recommendation from staff to turn down the application if they thought the existing bylaw was too harsh in a certain circumstance.

We really need to know the full picture before making judgements on vote totals. Just because developments are approved doesn't mean that they are the right developments or are working to help ease affordability. It also doesn't mean that taxpayers are getting the best deal in terms of amenities and community benefit. I would be just as suspicious of someone who approved every deal as someone who voted against every one.

However, it's a guarantee that every development that doesn't get approved/built does not ease the housing shortage.

True, but a development that does get built but only caters towards wealthy retirees occupies a site that could have been used for housing that is more affordable.

There's so much complexity behind a simple "yes" or "no" vote. For instance Pam voted yes on the Bayview tower, not because she was a fan of the height or the design but because the zoning had already been in place for a long time and it was unfair to the developer to back out of that agreement.

So I welcome a record of votes but warn yes votes don't mean pro-development and no votes don't mean NIMBY. You have to look at these stats in context.

again a bunch of yes votes to maybe 2,000 at best housing units is not going to get anyone mad at council.

so far the website is a dud.

With Coleman gone the only incumbent I would vote for in Victoria (I live in Oak Bay, so it doesn't really matter what I think anyway) is Alto, and I'm glad she has the pro-development record that I support.

Release
Stephen Andrew declares run for Victoria Council

VICTORIA, August 30, 2018 – Stephen Andrew, the former television journalist and talk show host is running for a seat on Victoria Council.
“For the past several years we moved away from good governance. Well, it’s time for a change, we need new voices at the council table that are respectful, reasoned and provide superior leadership,” says Andrew.
The Executive Director of a national patient organization that supports, educates and advocates for cancer patients and their families says the deciding factor for joining the race is the lack of process in the removal of the Sir John A. Macdonald statue outside Victoria City Hall.
“The Mayor and majority of council were so disrespectful to all citizens of Victoria,” explains Andrew. “The council believes the wave of anger they experience is just the issue of the statue. From what I’m hearing it’s the breaking point for a number of poorly handled issues.”
Andrew says his work, his volunteer contribution and participation on community boards has prepared him for a seat at the council table.
“I have the knowledge, the experience and the passion to work with others to provide good governance for a better Victoria.

I think that he's a shoe-in for Council, based on name recognition alone.  As for hitching his wagon to newcouncil's star, he's far more important to their slate than the slate is to him.  Andrew makes the slate competitive.  I'm not sure what he gets out of it, aside from clearly aligning himself against the mayor (as the newcouncil slate has done).

At this point, I'd say my vote looks like:

Mayor - Hammond

Council - Andrew, Johal and Alto

Everyone one else ranges from basically terrible to beyond terrible.

I think Andrew Reeve offers just as much as Jeremy Loveday did 4 years ago, even without any slam poet credentials.

Perhaps, but to the best of my knowledge he's not mentoring under Ben Isitt so that makes him electable in my book.

There's still such an opportunity for someone to have a good run at a Council seat. The appetite for change is there, and we already know we'll have at least two new faces with Coleman and Lucas gone. Good to see Stephen formally in...he has one of my votes, for sure.

Very pleased to see some great viable choices for mayor and council after suffering a mild panic mid-August.

Wow, "not Ben Isitt or one of his cronies" is a really low bar.  If you look at his bio, he's on the exact same career path as Rob Fleming, except far less successful because he's in the wrong town for it (Victoria = NDP hacks > Liberal Party of Canada hacks).  He's never lived anywhere else (as an adult, anyway), did his undergrad at UVic and has "worked" in communications for government in both political and non-political capacities.  He has absolutely ZERO relatable life experience.

Have you seen his website?  The photos are cringe-worthy spectacles of someone who takes himself waaaay too seriously.  He's a politician, first and foremost, who brings to the table nothing more than that - except for his naked self-ambition.  I thought that we needed fewer people like that on Council.

If I were SA, my concern would be that I get elected along with Helps and her progressive slate and then left on the outside for the next 4 years with a meaningless vote. I would argue that it is in his best interest to get as many people elected as possible who share a similar mindset.

The thing to do is just vote for all of New Council.  You will never find the perfect slate with the perfect candidates, but these guys have the right idea and you might as well support them all

So who, might I ask, would you prefer to see remain from the present council (whose track records are well known) since you cannot possibly support someone like Andrew Reeve? I have yet to see any new faces for council (with the exception of the other "newcouncil" folks) that appear to offer anything other than exactly what we already have. I am willing to give Mr. Reeve a chance, since at least he isn't an incumbent. If he disappoints, then that will be reflected in my vote in 2022.

Your point is a good one, I'll concede that.  But I employed that same logic to cast a vote against Dean Fortin and for Lisa Helps.  Look where we are today.  Again, being not terrible, which appears to be your bar, is not mine.  I'll vote for the people I want to vote for and no one more. No one is compelled to cast all eight of their council votes.  You vote for him for the reason that he's not an incumbent or from the other equally terrible slate; and I'll throw my vote away rather than reward him for being slightly less terrible than the others.
