As someone who identifies as political centrist I always find it amusing when strangers on the internet call me a Conservative. In fact, of the four major federal parties, the Conservatives are the only party where someone who has run for them is not currently endorsing me. But partisan politics has no place at the municipal level so I would encourage you to read where I stand on the issues: https://www.andrewre..._and_priorities

Jared,

You’re out to lunch if you in any way think I am conservative.

Completely out to lunch.

S

The chart is relative! Victoria is very left compared to the national Overton Window. I know that Andrew is a federal Liberal and I suspect that's about where both Stephens would fall too.

If you guys are progressive maybe add some social justice items to your platforms?

Why do the causes of social justice need to be a significant focus of municipal politics? Theses are rightly the purview of the provincial and federal jurisdictions. Cities with few taxation options and limited resources have allowed the other levels of government to off load too much. It's time to push back.

I'm having a hard time picking candidates in Saanich because there are too many one issue or SJW focused candidates. Too many people who are focused on slower speed limits and plastic bags and not on fiscal prudence, local economy growth, red tape cutting, efficiency gains...

9 candidates 90 minutes.  after intros and the host talking at best you heard each candidate for 7 minutes.  nothing much was learned in that debate except that mcguigan sounds just like a know-it-all professor.  oh and one guy wants the entire city to be a tent city says everyone will go for it when they find free tenting is better than home ownership.

helps did talk about the elsner thing.

Agreed. I think that Bruce did not perform well, Mike a little better than I expected, and Stephen and Lisa were the most balanced.

Lisa responded to a question about Elsner but as usual contradicted what the PCC and yesterday's letter claimed.

The mandate of a municpality is not social justice but to run the municipality. This means pipes, roads, water and sewage, parks, zoning and development.

The rules are set out by the Local Government Act. http://www.bclaws.ca...atreg/r15001_00 What part of this act requires SJW Activism?

The word 'Progressive' has been hi-jacked by certain groups that want to push an agenda of wealth redistribution, anti-business, decolonization etc. Where in the Local Government Act does it say this is required?

Thats not to say we dont want our local government to look after its citizens most in need, but thats the jursidiction of the Province and the more local government takes it on the more the Province will let them...and it becomes what we are seeing...a mess due in part to a whole bunch of SJW's who dont understand unintended consequences

But we were able to tackle the key question facing voters: "Is evil real?"

My initial thoughts:

Hammond very strong, clear front-runner.

McGuigan: okay to a point but when he went after Hammond he obliterated any chance of getting my vote. YOU are the fearmonger, Bruce, not Hammond. You seem reasonable to a point, but you sorta showed your true colours there.

Helps:Evasive, esp when on the spot re Elsner. Also now suspicious that she's in cahoots with RyMo.

Also, this debate reinforced the need to raise the bar in terms of who can run.

Missed the first part as was just going to listen on Cfax. Got the last half on Facebook live. I am hoping they will have a recording up somewhere I can catch the first half.

I think this comment shows it all. You base your chart on the need for social justice issue and slant it towards those that push for social justice issues as positive.

Basically you show what your preference is. 🤔

Check out my position on Recovery and the Homeless.

And Jared, I need to call you out on your narrow mindedness. I am here under my real name, full name.

A google search will show that I advocate for cancer patients and their caregivers. I was responsible for getting a major cancer drug added to the provincial formulary in BC that helped hundreds of cancer patient in this province and in turn paved the way for the drug to be listed across Canada.

I am notorious for fighting for the “little guy” - just google “Stephen Andrew reporter Wharfside”.

I also sit on a board of an organization that advocates for and supports people with diverse abilities.

Those that know me will tell you I have a tremendous social conscience.

You are also not aware of the countless hours I spend volunteering in our community.

This may not fit your narrow definition of “soclal justice”, but I assure you the “Conservative” moniker that you are trying to stick to me is laughable.

I'll update my chart. Thank you for drawing my attention to those policies, Stephen! I'm sorry I missed them on my first read through your site.

I am in the same boat. I am not in favour of amalgamation. I initially thought the Atwell slate looked promising but not impressed with some of their plans specifically turning the old library into a supported housing facility.

I'd rather have a candidate with a social conscience, who knows the boundaries of their jurisdiction and is focused on doing a really great job of managing those responsibilities, than someone who places their SJ causes ahead of what are their obligations.  Take care of the obligations first, then work on the "nice to haves" - within the confines of what can be reasonably done by a city and its taxpayers.

I do think there's too much opportunity to misappropriate resources towards SJW causes without an explicit mandate from the voters to do so.

Looking at Victoria's budget I don't see a lot of money being diverted to so called SJW causes. You can certainly argue some of the spending is frivolous or wasteful but I don't get the SJW connection.

66 million bridge coming in at $110 million is a travesty but that's just plain bad management.

General corporate expenses are too high in Victoria but that significantly predates Helps (she did not make it better though)

Policing costs are too high in Victoria but that relates to Victoria getting nearly 100% of the inner city problem for a region of 350 K.

Music stairwells and poet laureates - perhaps frivolous - but nothing inherently "SJW"

I would point to the resources being poured into low (no) barrier housing and social services agencies who are not being held accountable for outcomes.
