As a member of CUPE and a delegate to the VLC I will be voting for names from that list as they have shown they care about our community and are willing to fight to make it better.

You may strongly disagree with their decisions but the idea that Madoff and Thornton-Joe don't care about their communities and can't be bothered to fight to improve things is ludicrous.

It's all about union support, which is fine but let's be honest about it.

I think just about everyone on council and running for it care about their community and want to fight for it,  they just have different ideas on who's a member of the in-groups and out-groups within their idea of the community.

That VLC list doesn't include any mayoral candidates that they're pushing. In the past they supported Fortin, no? (Dean's Dream Team)  Why no recommendation on mayor this time?

Because Ben chose to not run for mayor?

They only endorse those who seek their endorsement.  If none of the mayors sought their endorsement then you'll get no mayoral endorsement.

Two elections ago off-duty bus drivers dressed in official garb were walking the Douglas strip handing out VLC pamphlets promoting their council choices under the guise they and only they supported better transit in Victoria.

The VLC is manipulating voters with these pamphlets and unfortunately the ‘they and only they’ verbiage is very powerful.

Dastardly organized interest groups pushing for candidates that they believe best support their interests.  Sometimes you gotta get partisan or align with other groups in order to push your own agenda, that's just politics.

Here's what I want - a mayor and a council who do such a good job, that voting for incumbents in 2022 is a no-brainer.  I want 4 years of projects that are run on time and on budget.  I want 4 years where Victoria is a little more cohesive.  I want to look back in 2022, and think, we'll compared to 2018 we're solidly better off.  In 4 years, I'd like it if those in Saanich, Esquimalt and Oak Bay would view the prospect of joining forces with Victoria as a reasonable and feasible thing to do in the best interests of the region as a whole.

^ yup. Amalgamation has become unpopular lately in Saanich, mainly due to the mess Victoria is. Wouldn't be surprised if the citizen's assembly question fails.

It was destined to fail once Brice got to change the wording to make the focus on the expense and not the topic

It’s pretty shady.

That style might be grandpa’s idea of politics but it’s lame in this day and age.

Well there's certainly levels to it.  For example if my main issue say was downtown parking me and a bunch of fellow concerned merchants might put up posters in our shops for the candidates we believe will best protect or expand parking downtown,  that's fair enough no?  Ok well now people have realized we seem to have chosen 4 particular candidates to get behind in the name of parking,  2 other candidates out there are very pro-parking but they also have some politics that we think would hurt us as small business so we want to focus on the 4 we've vetted.  Are we saying only these 4 care about parking? Are we saying anyone not on our list is anti-parking? Someone might see it that way, but they're probably smart enough to see that we're a group of downtown businesses so of course there's going to be a certain bias over who we're endorsing as part of the "Pro-parking slate".  Things have gotten partisan at this point, but I don't think has crossed any lines.

Now, if we went a step farther and started loudly saying our 4 endorsed "pro-parking slate" candidates are the ONLY candidates who care about parking, the only candidates that want to make it easier and cheaper to drive and park downtown, that voting for anyone else but our slate is a vote for the war on cars and the death of downtown business, that's getting into the bad campaigning zone because it's claiming something that factually isn't true.  We could weasel-word around it and say "we think these 4 and only these 4 are the best votes for protecting parking for workers and shoppers downtown" but the message would be clear.  Also it's purely a coincidence that the 4 people we're supporting strictly about parking policies happen to be the 4 candidates that also want to lower commercial property taxes, reverse the plastic bag ban,  clamp down on homeless people panhandling or sleeping near businesses, and another slate of policies our group happens to ideologically align with.

i posted it a page back.

Yes, thanks. That's basically the list I got. Page 206 on here. I'm a CUPE member, I think someone was wondering.

I basically object to being told who to vote for, even if I agree with some of the choices.

Our streets are covered with signs saying "VOTE FOR [candidate]".  Trying to tell you who to vote for is called campaigning.  That's like the most basic form of campaigning,  a sign with text with a single word of instruction "vote" and then a name for who they are telling you to vote for.   Getting endorsements, getting other people to add to your voice telling others to vote for you is pretty much the foundation on how elections are won.

Those signs aren't being delivered to my mailbox or slipped under my front door.

i agree. we likely have all asked voting advice from friends, parents, etc.  your union suggesting a few names especially to fill up your long council or school board list seems normal.
