And so we can look forward to Lisa Helps getting re-elected with 25% of the vote. That really puts the crazy in democracy.

Saul ran for councillor in the last two elections. He hasn't run for mayor since 2008.
Don't forget about RyMo! No one who visited the Shop page of his campaign website has been able to...

Bruce McGuigan filed his nomination package for Mayor today.
Is anyone NOT running for Mayor at this point? Each new candidate pushes us perilously closer to four more years of the incumbent.
To any other potential mayors thinking of joining the race: please consider the vote splitting effect and ponder the notion of 4 more years of the current mayor. Would you want that on your conscience?

Lisa is in trouble, and she knows it. She will be lucky to poll at 15%.

I expect strategic voting to occur, and people are going to pile on behind the candidate who they see as being most able to beat Helps. Elections signs likely matter this election. To that end - I've got to applaud the Hammond team for encouraging people to print their own window signs, etc.

I don't get it, in this environment why not run for council - stand a fairly get chance of election, serve 4 years or so and then go for the mayor's seat? A little surprised Isitt hasn't put his hat into the ring for Mayor.

So how many now for mayor?
Lisa Helps
Stephen Hammond
Gary Beyer
Bruce McGuigan
Rob Duncan
Sean Leitenberg
Mike Geoghegan [possibly?]
Diana Smardon [possibly?]
This is nuts. Recall 2014 when there were four "serious" candidates and four fringe/joke candidates. If Shebib and the other usual suspects show up this will be a huge list.

We were approached by a number of other potential candidates who told us that Bruce shouldn’t run because of vote splitting. I told them if they were concerned about vote splitting, then they should ensure that their candidate could step down.Is anyone NOT running for Mayor at this point? Each new candidate pushes us perilously closer to four more years of the incumbent.

Besides, no one is “running” until their nomination is approved. Most haven’t even submitted their paperwork yet.

Isitt knows he would lose in a mayoral race and he would lose his council seat to boot.
As for why people aren’t running for council instead, I think that speaks directly to how much people want to see Helps gone.

If that's true all these people should be supporting candidates, not becoming candidates.

Perhaps I wasn't looking at the right news publication, but Isitt became fairly quiet after the SJM incident. This struck me as odd as he is usually pretty vocal regardless of how it might impact the general population. He has always been very pro "decolonization".

And with so many other candidates running that might still be all she needs. A few "anyone but Helps" candidates need to bow out.

Of course he's quiet; he's letting Helps take the flack for it. It's Pontius Pilate's playbook

I understand that Bruce McGuigan was advised this and ignored said advice. I don’t get why people seem intent on repeating history.

Where did you find that information on "the Hammond team for encouraging people to print their own window signs, etc." Is there a template we should be using/sharing with others?

He sent this email out today:
Friend --
After talking with my family and community members, I've decided to seek re-election to the office of city councillor and regional director in Victoria.
We've made progress over the past term, on issues including housing affordability, sustainable transportation, environmental protection and good government. This includes securing a $90-million investment in the Regional Housing First Program, increasing funding for community centres and seniors centres by more than 50%, improving options for walking and cycling, and being the first municipality in British Columbia to eliminate single-use plastic bags as a first step toward a broader zero-waste strategy.
But there is much more work to do. I believe that local government must do more to guarantee the right of all people to:
- live with dignity in safe, energy-efficient, affordable housing;
- live in a healthy environment with a stable climate, sustainable transportation options and access to nature, clean air, fresh water and nutritious food;
- participate actively in an inclusive community, with adequate income, support services and access to arts, culture and recreation;
- participate actively in our local democracy, with stronger connections between residents, neighbourhoods and City Hall.
While we may not agree on every issue, I think that my track record standing up for our community is clear.
I hope that I can count on your support in the October 20 election. If you want me to continue representing you on City Council and the CRD, please take a moment to indicate your support and consider making a financial contribution today.
I appreciate your support and any ideas you wish to share for building a stronger community.
All the best,
Ben
Ben Isitt
