Yup, it looks like clips from newscasts and videos taken during events. I didn’t see any disingenuous editing or anything of the sort.

I definitely agree that these are all pretty valid complaints, but there is absolutely some disingenuous editing.

- 0:00: Hammer and sickle on the superimposed hat on Helps. Has Lisa Helps been shown to be a communist or lean towards communism? Not in my observation over her 7 years on council.

- 0:52: Interesting cut choice to leave the weighted question without letting her respond.

- 1:04: Seriously? Can't take a joke? She laughs off the first question (thus taking the joke), and this video cuts out her being asked the second question about his eyes which sets her off (and fair enough...who is the idiot asking questions about Trudeau's looks instead of what they talked about in their meeting)

- 1:14: Fear of public discourse? You guys realize she holds regular sessions with the public where literally anyone can walk into her office and give her a mouthful. I've been to one...they are hilarious. Unsurprisingly she wants to stay away from a platform where you can hide behind your screen.

- 3:15: This seems more anti-gay sentiment than anything else, which fair enough if that's their opinion. $14,000 for the rainbow crosswalks is nothing compared to what we paid for those stupid temporary puzzle pieces. Not surprising this group chose the rainbows though to complain about if they are anti-gay.

- 5:58: Here we go with the hammer and sickle again.

- 6:48: "Unelected shadow government"...oh ffs, it's a committee. Just like the dozen or so other committees of council. That all do the same thing. Bring forth recommendation for Council to vote on. Like they did in this instance. As I've said before, the John A removal decision is 100% on Council, the City Family just made a recommendation, just like the Advisory Design Panel makes recommendations, or the Library Board makes recommendations.

Good grief, I'm not even voting for this woman and I find myself having to defend her from all of this garbage being put out. There are SOOO many things to show her being a bad mayor for this city without going into childish sensationalism.

Mayor Helps has thrived by running the City is a near constant state of conflict with taxpayers. It is not a surprise that there are many people who strong opinions, one way or another, about her.

I don't feel badly for her though as this is what she wanted. Like Trump she has found that polarizing people helps build the resolve of her base of support.

What I fear is that this is system we now have.

The Ben Isitt clips were amusing though.

"Freedom Free For All" sounds like a parody of American interest groups overusing these words in their names. Scrolling through their content though... wow. They would still come off as unhinged if they were actually from a small Arkansas town. I guess that explains the edits not being particularly useful, it's really just for cheap laughs if you subscribe to their train of thought.

I don't agree with all your analysis but, yeah, making good points in a childish somewhat breitbartish video is not helpful.

A set of inflammatory Facebook ads in Victoria, B.C.'s mayoral race shows municipal politics is just as vulnerable to social media misinformation, as it is at the federal and provincial levels.

David Black, a professor of communication at Victoria's Royal Roads University, says as an increasing portion of our lives are lived online, so too is our political discourse. The problem is discerning fact from fiction.

"That's the tension ...  anybody can disseminate information and opinion very widely anonymously and without any standards of proof," Black said.

The continuous applause loop is just the banner.  Scroll down a bit, you'll see the live feed.  I just saw a bit of it, and was too nauseated to continue.

A lawyer was on CFAX earlier being asked if the comments about Helps and the casino thing were legally ok and he said yes.

You’ve got some good points there, but the Hammer and Sickle was more humour than anything else. It’s no big deal.

The puzzle crosswalk wasn’t paid for by CoV taxpayers, but it was paid for by downtown businesses through the DVBA.

The Family is a contentious “committee” in that its membership wasn’t revealed, their decisions and actions in pursuit of an agenda were in-camera and council voted for the removal out of pressure. The very next day several criticized the process, indicating they were backed into a PC corner and felt like they had to tow the line. Since then two councillors have decided not to seek re-election, one a veteran politician who’s served for many years and the other a businesswoman with a hotel across the street from city hall.

We’re never going to see A+ cinematography and production value out of a hokey video made in someone’s basement, but that video is also not an unhinged “alt-right” piece of propaganda.

No, it was paid for in part by taxpayers. The DVBA, CoV, and Downtown Victoria 2020 each contributed $60,000 towards the $180,000 project that included the puzzle pieces and colourful racks/bike shelter.

So for $60,000 the CoV taxpayers ended up with a kind of odd looking bike shelter and those weird bird feeder things outside of the Bank of Montreal on Yates.

Money well spent.  :whyme:

So from what I saw this Facebook Live event was a roaring success with only 244 having view it when I fast forwarded through it at 8:10 PM. They did make some snide comment about if New Council was watching. Other then that no real involvement or questions of substance.

Are you serious? We put $60k towards that catastrophe?

I looked at Helps' election platform page today. Much of it seemed like a lot of hot air, there were way too many "goals" listed and some of it seemed beyond the control of a Victoria mayor. I'd rather see someone simply say, we're gonna power wash the sidewalks!
