On the plus side, the Wade's indoor pool is going to be a decent size.

I'm not wading into this one with cheesy jokes.

The Falls construction site, the recent Oak Bay Ave. retaining wall and now this. No injuries in all cases but only by freaking luck because all three incidents happened in the daytime near busy bus stops.
One day our good fortune will run out and it will be tragic. It's time to re-examine current procedures when it comes to shoring up excavations.

Here is an article regarding The Falls collapse which happened just over 10 years ago, September 2007:
The report, issued on Jan. 14, concluded the general contractor, Laser Projects Corporation, failed to follow the geotechnical engineer’s instructions, and that the geotechnical engineering firm, C.N. Ryzuk and Associates, failed to provide adequate instructions, site tests and inspections.
“I don’t want to say that we’re inspecting any particular site, but it’s fair to say this employer’s future compliance with the order will be the subject of our continuing interest,” said Kevin Murray, director of investigations at WorkSafe B.C.

The size of the collapse is amazing; it's far larger than The Falls. The Johnson Street sidewalk dropped ten feet from one end of the lot to the other. The shotcrete on the inside of the excavation slumped away and everything between that and the curb fell, including the sidewalk and the grassy boulevard. The big trees are mostly stable but everything else fell away around them.
BC Hydro and City crews are on site but I did not see any cars from a geotechnical firm.

It's a strange collapse pattern, for sure.

So I guess the first question is did the water main break cause the collapse or did the collapse break the water main?

RG is doing the excavation and I am guessing Western Grater did the shoring. I'll find out more next week when everyone is back from holidays
Was the site active today, I am guessing not

I didn't see a single soul on the site itself. Johnson Street is blocked off, btw, so use another route out of town.

But there should be a geotech firm that OKs the excavation involved as well.

I'm glad this building is not going to be 15 floors !!!

I don't think it has been for a week or two. Some work going on in the existing building though.

That looks like a boggy mess of clay similar to the hole at 200 Cook Street, and here is how they dealt with the shoring at that site.

Shoring is usually design build by the shoring contractor. I'll find out who the geotech is next week, but I would probably bet its Ryzuk
Its hard to say what happened, but its definitely water relaxed

that doesn't surprise me, usually everyone is gone between Christmas and New Years
