2016 Victoria event information.

Canada’s Bear Mountain Resort named as host of 2016 Pacific Links Championship

So this is easily the largest golf event we've ever had.  Tickets will be $30-40/day or $90 to $100 or so for the week.

Tournament week in Victoria will begin with pro-ams on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by 54 holes of tournament play from Friday through Sunday, with no cut. All three rounds will be broadcast on Golf Channel.

Cool event. I wonder how they pick the pro-ams participants.

The sponsors buy some with their packages, the bidder (Bear Mountain) gets some and some may be given to charity to sell/auction to raise money from partial proceeds.  So you can buy your way in.

So are the big names participating in the Pro-Am, or is that just local players?

Oh no, the big names will be playing, but it costs. Friend of mine paid $10,000 to play with Fred Couples and Freddy was a complete dick the whole round, and then wouldn't sit with the non-pros at the dinner.

Sergio on the other hand was lots of fun to be with.

The tournament is looking for 500 volunteers, so far has 463.

I meant will we be watching the big names on the Pro-Am days, or will they be only playing on the championship days?

But yeah, I've heard nothing but good things about Sergio.

John Daly may have pilled out, but let me tell ya, there were a whole bunch of players at the Strath last night drinking like John Daly.  Good times.

I've tried sporadically and only very periodically over the years but just can't get into golf. Don't understand the appeal - especially watching it on TV. Its fine to play mickey golf when you're dragged into it for a business/work place function, but beyond that it just doesn't float my boat at all. That said very clearly its big business - any estimates from the organizers of this event how much $ they figure will be injected into local coffers?

It has a certain following for sure.  Just look at the TV commercials during golf broadcasts.  Very different than hockey or football, for sure.

Well it was pretty cool on the driving range today watching Langer, Jiminez and Montgomerie hitting balls and then watching them play a practice round. They hit the ball just like I do when they play, not nearly as often though.

How good are these guys, eh?  Top of the leaderboard after one day.

You know, it's the biggest golf tournament in Victoria's history, but I only heard one live report from CFAX, and they had Bill O'Kell out covering it.  The TC does not appear to have any updated article.  Huh.

Scott McCarron birdied five of the first six holes and finished with a course-record 8-under 62 to take the first-round lead Friday in the Pacific Links Bear Mountain Championship.

The 51-year-old McCarron birdied all four par-5 holes — Nos. 1, 12, 13 and 18 — in chilly conditions at Bear Mountain Resort, the first-year venue in the PGA Tour Champions event that was played in Hawaii from 2012-14.

"I really enjoy the golf course. I love the layout," McCarron said. "It's really one of the prettiest golf courses I've ever played in my life, it's just fantastic. It's my new favourite golf course, of course."

McCarron won the Principal Charity Classic in June in Iowa for his first victory on the 50-and-over tour after winning three times on the PGA Tour.

"It was a tough day — we had a little drizzle, little bit of breeze and the fog came in and out," McCarron said. "There were a couple of holes where we had to wait until we could see the fairway. But I got off to a good start. I birdied the first three holes, made a couple nice putts and hit some good shots and the rest of the round kept going. I made another three birdies in a row in the middle of the round, and it was really nice to birdie the last hole to shoot 62."

Did you see his next shot into the hole for par?
