I read Saanich News often - Haynes has been running banner ads since the beginning of the term. He's been gunning for Atwell's spot. There is not a doubt about it.

If he runs he will beat Atwell in my opinion.

I think that Atwell has cleaned up his act over the past two years but folks will remember the crazy when he first took office.

Murdoch is throwing in the towel, says he wants to devote more time to his young family.

As noted above Dean Murdock is not running for Saanich council in 2018

Murdock is a three-term councillor in Saanich. He is probably the councillor I associate most with the development of, approval of and support of the Environmental Permit Development Area (EPDA). I've met Dean several times and I like him a lot (although I don't support the now rescinded EPDA). If he had decided to run again I would have supported him.

He is an NDP supporter and he has been endorsed by the Victoria Labour Council in the past.  In 2014 he received more votes than anyone else in Saanich for council. If Frank Leonard had been reelected mayor in 2014, Murdock is the person who likely would have become Saanich mayor in 2018.

He is relatively young. I suspect we will see him again in municipal or provincial politics down the road.

I'm glad he stepped down. 3 terms is enough, if he's genuine about his reasons then I think he's making a smart choice. I'm not a fan of his, but acknowledge his commitment and drive.

3 terms is enough, any more than that and its a job. There is so much real deadwood on many of our local councils and (even though they will never admit it) we all know that most incumbents are re-elected due to name recognition more than actual platforms or accomplishments.

I can only hope Ms Brownoff and Ms Brice see the light and call it a day and let some fresh ideas enter the arena.

Local council watchdog Jaclyn Casler of Victorian Analysis was spotted breakfasting with Shellie Gudgeon and discussing a possible council run in Saanich. Safe to say that if she’s taking counsel from Shellie, that’s she’s likely pro-amalgamation.

Here’s here website and Twitter feed. Apologies, can’t embed links on mobile.

Oh yeah, Jaclyn would be a real asset in that regard.

Interesting she made her first Saanich blog post in three years yesterday tearing at Council. Interesting website. I don't necessarily agree with it all but seems well thought out.

The conversation with Shellie as I was informed included a discussion about where to run, whether it be Saanich or Victoria.  The conclusion was that Saanich seemed safer, as there is more opportunity with more open (Murdock) and vulnerable (Wergeland) seats up for grabs.  Take that for what it's worth.

It appears so. Formerly of Vic West, as per her blog and Victoria council minutes, respectively.

Given that we are in an election year, I propose the creation and application of a value based rubric to council performance. Following an opportunity for public feedback, I will be applying this rubric to the performance of Saanich Council.

Why Saanich? Because I pay taxes to Saanich as a homeowner.

Former mayor Frank Leonard has left his job as chair of the Agricultural Land Commission, and is now engaged in "local government consulting": http://frankleonard.ca/. Might he try to get his old job back?

He said his 3 year term was up.

Not so much left as his OIC expired. He was in his second term and as a fairly cushy sinecure and nearly two decades of favours to pay back, there was never any chance of the NDP renewing him for a third term. Especially being the good Liberal foot soldier from the local old guard that he is.

Maybe he should run for Mayor of Victoria will the stated purpose of amalgamating Saanich and Victoria.
