There's been a couple of references to a "search committee" looking to house cultural and other groups ranging form the SALTS to the Children's Museum.....

Where could such a facility locate in the Region if it is to be put under one roof?
The Crystal might be useful for demonstration exhibits showing what a children's museum is, and can do. But it isn't a long-term solution, said Ostro.

However Ostro said her organization is working with a relatively new group of seven "cultural precincts" that all need new facilities.

The Victoria Symphony, Pacific Opera Victoria, Maritime Museum of B.C., Children's Museum Association, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Sail & Life Training Society, and Boat Works have formed a workinggroup aimed at finding a joint facility that could be used by all of the organizations.

Greg Evans, chairman of the working group and executive director of the maritime museum, said the groups need a total of 228,000 square feet which could be under one roof "or a constellation of facilities" that are in one location and connected.

The group was formed last summer and meets monthly, including in their discussions representatives of the Provincial Capital Commission, Greater Victoria Harbour Association, Tourism Victoria and the City of Victoria.

[quote:7f3da]The art gallery is also linked with a group of seven cultural agencies, including the B.C. Maritime Museum, Victoria Symphony and Pacific Opera, which are looking at a single site to accommodate its space needs.
[/quote:7f3da]

I think a single site for all of these things would be a disaster. Half the fun of going to different museums galleries etc is that you go o different areas of town. Victoria is already seen as one-stop tourist stop. Let's spread these things out. I really think P3s are killing our cities...

You put all these things into one place and you just get people deciding to see that place or the museum. You seven sites all over the city and you get people going hey I should spend a couple days exploring this city.

How about using the area of Downtown North (Discovery District) for some or all of these facilities. Having them locate in this area would bring people North towards Rock Bay, revitalizing this area.

I think the gallery was serious about pursuing a joint site with other agencies until until the Westbank proposal, which this[/url:00093] (scroll down to Jan 18) article refers to, came along.
