The City of Victoria has approved the Yates St Community Garden in order to create a community gathering and gardening space downtown.
We are in need of some physically strong volunteers on either one of these days to help with the first stage of the Yates St. Community Garden project!

Tentative schedule:
August 29th 12pm-3pm (pallets arrive),
August 30th 12pm-5pm (boxes arrive) please bring a staple gun if you have one, and we need 2 more chordless drills,
August 31st 12pm-5pm (soil arrives) please bring a shovel if you have one.

Please contact Nicholas Harrington ndharrington@me.com for more information. Bring workgloves, a hat, sunscreen and water.

I am not sure what more needs to be done here. That's one of the healthiest crops of gravel I have ever seen.

ps: What's with that silly rickety fence on the west side of the lot? Is it supposed to disguise the giant orange wall?

The gravel drops off there, it's to stop wayward gardeners from going over.

Maybe we should just turn this lot over to the Nations now.

"Chordless drill" doesn't ring a bell.

Beware of creeping farm-ism, edge of the wedge and all that....

That looks like cedar, so it will probably be carted away by morning.

Are "we" supposed to feel guilty or something when "we" read such things? I just don't get it.

What an unbelievable waste of a downtown lot. This "garden" is going to look terrible within its first year and probably attract pests.

It has environmental issues so can't be used for anything else for a while.

I guess it's a matter of money to rehab the lot. Wouldn't it have been something to have a rooftop garden on whatever was built there?

There's an upcoming project in downtown that will actually incorporate just that.

Know it all.

I think it's a money and time thing.  Like how gas station lots have to sit fallow for a few years to make sure the stuff is gone, after interval testing.

Much like the courthouse land, but both should be considered for a fall planting of turnips.

Right, so is a community garden really a good idea?

Not in the downtown area where the vegetables are sitting around absorbing all the pollution from vehicles.

In another thread someone said the gukky stuff goes down, and not up, so they have enough gravel on the thing now to prevent any up-come of toxins.

But in general, it's a dumb idea.

I think crops would go missing in a hurry especially the marijuana hidden in with the tomatos.
