Vote for Canada's National Bird

...oops, too late

Our neighbours to the south have the bald eagle, Australia has the emu, and New Zealanders are often referred to as "kiwis."

But if you can't name Canada's national bird, there's a good reason — the country doesn't have one.

That's why, last year, Canadian Geographic magazine launched a national contest aimed at picking a bird which could represent the True North.

Canadians from across the country have voted online for their favourites, in a contest closing at midnight ET on Aug. 31, 2016.

Personally I'd vote for the grey owl however as its a predator and represents attributes like cunning, power and aggression I presume it might offend the gentler sensibilities of more sensitive 'enlightened' Canadians; therefore my guess is that we'll default to a nice safe Loon. At least according the numbers from yesterday it seems highly likely that we thankfully won't be voting in that excrement-creation machine, the Canada Goose.......

I always assumed it was the Canada goose.

Probably most people did; according to the link its not even in the top 3. They aren't a particularly well loved bird due to the fact their inevitable biologic "output" seems out of all proportion to their "intake". Or perhaps its just because they make such a damn mess when they find a spot to relieve themselves. When I lived in YVR I know locals in Burnaby and Kitsilano especially considered them a pest pure and simple, in spite of the fact they're actually a nice looking bird.

Who gave Canadian Geographic the authority to name a national bird? I don't see any reference to authority from the government, which I'd think would be required...

They're not really....

Remember, we’ll be proclaiming the winner in Canadian Geographic’s next annual wildlife issue (on newsstands November 21), then promoting the bird to be made official in time for the country’s 150th bash in 2017.

Also so far the front-runners (Loon and Snowy Owl) are already official provincial birds (Ontario and Quebec). Gray Jay is my vote! Robert Bateman agrees
