Interesting. The current situation may just be the legacy of all that, and they never bothered to make any significant changes? But considering all of the other changes and additions in the park over the decades, it seems odd. Maybe they were expecting heavier vehicle traffic on the surrounding streets but it never came to be?

Anyway, it should be a piece of cake to add a handful of new entry points. Ten million bucks and 18 months work, tops.

Full disclosure: I actually prefer some definition of a park's boundaries, with designated access points in various places rather than it being wide open all around. For example, I'd say the Harris Green east of Cook Street really suffers for not having anything in the way of a hedge or short iron fence or whatever along Pandora. It could be a legit park space, but instead it remains a gigantic traffic island.

Windsor Park is great but I agree they should add maybe two or three more entrances.

A playground just minutes from Harling Point will soon look a whole lot different.

At a meeting on July 28, council voted to award $324,000 to Swing Time Parks and Playgrounds to upgrade the rec equipment at Quimper Park.

“We’re pleased to bring forward the tender award to get this started,” said Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture, Thomas Soulliere. “We know that this is obviously a very important community amenity for those that live in the immediate neighbourhood as well as others that are coming from other parts of the community.”

Earlier this year, the district initiated a public-procurement process to solicit bids from qualified vendors to supply and install new playground features and equipment at the park.

Proposals were judged on a range of criteria, including price, warranty and safety, which Swing Time’s proposal met. It was also the only vendor offering local installers and Canadian-made equipment.

Langford has accelerated plans to nearly double the size of Veterans Memorial Park in the city’s core, approving $2.65 million for the project ahead of the adoption of its financial plan for the next four years, and with no final design completed.

Council unanimously agreed with a staff recommendation to move forward with the 1.35-acre expansion, which would allow the work to be tendered this winter, start in early spring and be completed by late next year.

“I’m happy to get moving on this — it’s really to the benefit of our community,” said Coun. Lillian Szpak.

Coun. Keith Yacucha noted that the money for the expansion is coming from developer cost charges already earmarked for parkland improvement, so it won’t be a tax hit for property owners.

The expansion of the park, used for public gatherings such as Remembrance Day services and markets, is expected to include a bandshell for performances, picnic areas with tables, upgraded washroom facilities, additional parking and looped pathways.

There has been an unexpected twist in the tale of Colwood’s controversial “rollercoaster” slide – it’s back.  Believed to be responsible for broken limbs and many minor injuries, the metal spiral tube slide attached to Quarry Park’s three-level castle was removed last summer by the City of Colwood and Path Developments.  Following its removal, the city and developer said it was working with the playground provider to determine the next steps. A new piece of play equipment was expected to be installed in the same location in the fall.

Langford is taking steps to ensure 209 acres of greenspace around the city are permanently protected as parkland.

Council passed a bylaw this week to formally define 90 parcels as dedicated parks.

Mayor Scott Goodmanson said the bylaw ensures future councils cannot dispose of or sell the lands without broad public consent.

Sidney is going to turn down the Central Saanich 10,000 sq. ft. recreation centre.

A proposal to borrow millions to build a new recreation centre on the Saanich Peninsula has failed to clear its first hurdle after Sidney council rejected the plan.

Sidney voted 4-3 against a borrowing proposal to build the regional facility in Central Saanich, throwing the future of the 10,000-square-foot building at 1882 Hovey Road into doubt.

Central Saanich’s new public safety building will house the police and fire departments. Don’t police and fire stations have their own workout facilities anyway?

I wonder if this was just a ploy to get the neighboring communities to pay for the gym space that central Saanich needed to include anyway.

The new “recreation facility” they were hoping to build was only a weight gym, a dance studio, and a pottery studio (Sidenote: pottery, really?) it’s not like they were building a new pool and tennis courts - which we don’t need on the peninsula. Panorama is just fine.

Is it cheaper to make your own pots, than buy them at Walmart?

It does seem a bit lame.

For those keeping score, we now live in a world where:

-people buy pot at the store instead of growing it themselves

-people make pots themselves instead of buying them at the store
