This doesn't account for the likely presence of chemicals found in the excrement of some of the homeless population as well as needles and other contaminants that would get washed into the storm drains. Look at the toxicity of the soil at the Court House lands after less than a year of tent city.

I read that Southern California (San Diego I think) suffered a hepatitis epidemic spread in part by « steamers », not of the trick type. SF might be taking extra care not to enjoy the same experience.

I was able to observe a cross section of street life in Vacouver over the course of the day yesterday. One chap in particular grabbed my attention. The first time I saw him he was crouched quietly but seemed a little odd or disturbed. He appeared as though he was somewhat distracted.

By evening’s end he was definitely absorbed by something.

I wish that there was more that our society could offer him in the way of emotional and physical comfort.

I see this as a catch 22 .
The more you normalize it the more the danger of more illegal unsafe drugs or being used by kids who already think their invincible.
Being a drug addict is not normal.
Leaving children without functioning parents is not ok.
A more sensible approach would be :
Addiction hits all walks of life
Same photos
Are you tired of spending your life hiding behind drugs .
Are your tired of needing drugs to just feel normal.
What excuses and lies do you tell yourself.
What do you say to yourself when you look into the eyes of your children.
Let us help you before the damage is permanent.
Let’s do the hard work together to restore your dignity.

It's becoming more bizarre by the day. It seems like half the population is addicted when you look at these ads. How can drug use be "recreational"? Even fifty years ago when I was a kid you were told, if you take X, Y. or Z, you'll probably die.

I know about a few people--friends of friends--that do hard drugs occasionally. They would be offended if you lumped them in with the hardcore street users. They justify their use saying, "only on weekends, or special occasions and I pay my guy extra to get the "clean" stuff".As you know from the news these people sometimes die. But if you saw them you would not guess they sometimes do hard drugs.
