You are missing the fact that the whole point of the service is to give Abbey a job.

B.C advocates push back as Health Canada mulls lower-than-requested legal drug possession

Advocates say 2.5 gram threshold being considered isn’t evidenced based

Isn’t addiction a serious mental illness? Why give people more drugs?

Why is it the government’s responsibility to choose what drugs we take with technology today we’re all highly educated on what these drugs do. Should be able to go to any pharmacy and buy whatever you want. Still end up with more brain cells overall at the end of the day with a clean supply.

honk, honk

On the sixth anniversary of the overdose crisis being declared a public health emergency in B.C., Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps says the province has the ability to act swiftly and effectively on toxic-drug overdoses, as it did on COVID-19 vaccinations.

More than 90 per cent of British Columbians were fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in just over a year, Helps noted in a statement. “We know there is capacity for action,” she said, adding the same level of commitment and action is required to get safe prescription supply into the hands of those who need it, “so that a substance-use disorder is treated like a medical issue, rather than a criminal issue.”

Pretty sure racing to prescribe and deliver free and terribly addictive painkillers to troubled souls isn’t the right solution.

There is never any talk about abstinence, just safe supply. This safe supply will just get more people hooked on drugs.

"safe" supply gives the impression the drugs are safe.  "uncontaminated supply" should be the label on the tin.

Lisa Lapointe, chief coroner with the BC Coroners Service, says illicit drugs are so toxic that fentanyl is killing 80 per cent of substance users and an overdose-reversing drug is increasingly not useful because substances often contain a benzodiazepine that knocks people out.

Lapointe echoed Helps’ statement, saying she’s frustrated that 2,232 people died of overdose last year, but emergency action hasn’t happened during a public health emergency that seems to have no end.

She says it’s time for a novel response that would also include a clear path to treatment so people aren’t dying on wait lists, as well as research into whether services offered by private organizations are effective.

Please. Where is the evidence the new plan works?

If it is killing 80% of users then the problem should be solved in short order.

Mental Health and Addictions Minister Sheila Malcolmson said Tuesday that the overdose crisis “continues to deepen, despite everything we’re throwing at it.”

The province has added more options for medication-assisted treatment, inhalation overdose prevention and community-driven harm-reduction measures.

B.C. is a national leader on prescribed safe supply and decriminalization of those who use drugs, according to the province.

Any chance the problem is growing “because” of everything we are throwing at it, instead of despite?

^ that’s a grand statement. So why are we also the leading overdose death province?

Maybe we should look at the province with the fewest overdose deaths and see what they do or don’t do.

Now, the numbers vary a bit by where you read them, but it would seem the highest deaths are 30-39 year old men. Let’s zoom in on that, and see if we can find a way to get those men to act more like 20 year old men with regard to drugs. Or more like 30-39 year old women, who are only half as likely to overdose.

It probably follows that men 30-39 are ones that have used drugs for some time, and now have increasingly bleak prospects for stable employment and living situations.

Giving them free state-controlled drugs is unlikely to better their lot.
