I have lost my patience with the DT population who make their substance-induced psychosis everyone else's problem. Too many confrontations. Thursday evening we were waiting for a bus and my kid and I were asked for a quarter by a very animated and aggressive guy with a bike. My kid and I both said, no sorry we don't have any change and my daughter even gave him a smile. We turned back around to look at the window display we had been interrupted discussing only to have this guy come right up to our backsides and point his finger into my head like a gun, saying yeah f--- you you don't DONATE **** I know your type blah blah. My daughter freaked (she's 9) and I turned around and got between them, was super angry and asked him, "What did you just say?" He backed off and then as soon as we turned around again he came at us swinging his bike. A man passing by stepped in. I'm so done with this BS. I've started carrying two types of protection because I feel vulnerable without it. Little does this guy know we donate food, toiletries and clothing through the year to Our Place. We care about the homeless population. However, I am DONE taking this **** from the aggressive active addicts in our city core.

First of all, I am very sorry for this terrible encounter you and your daughter had to endure JennKa. If you feel you can, I think you should share this experience far and wide on social media, if for no other reason than to dispel the myth of the "addict as victim" we constantly hear from the local SJWs. I strongly suggest you send an email to the mayor and Victoria city council (mayorandcouncil@victoria.ca) to make them aware that there are other victims in this nightmare they insist they are dealing with appropriately.

Seattle to open their first safe injection site (there are none in the US). King county (Greater Seattle) had 132 overdose deaths in 2015, and they want to emulate Vancoubpver, who had 134 overdose deaths in the same year.

This is the delusion:
"The real goal is not to open a day spa where people can come in and have a good time and use drugs, but to engage them in treatment,” Jeff Duchin, the health officer for Seattle and King County, said. “They inject in a place where there’s a health-care worker who can save their lives if they overdose."

Vancouver Health Authority itself reports that only a small percentage of Insite "clients" even bothered registering for detox in 2015. Obviously, evidence based practice only works when the narrative fits your end goal...

...Or is the treatment the Seattle guy referring to simply the injection of Narcan when there's an overdose, which effectively makes it like a spa with a lifeguard by the pool. Either way, it's pathetic and criminal.

Yes, par for the course, unfortunately.

Thank you for voicing your opinion. This type of activity is incredibly common in the downtown core and environs, but folks who've never experienced it will often downplay these incidents.

I'm sorry your daughter had to witness that :(

Hope at last:

"University of Calgary researchers believe a medication already being used to treat gout could be a weapon in the fight against opioid dependency — by alleviating withdrawal symptoms.

"We were able to substantially reduce the withdrawal."

If this is true, then there shouid be no more excuses. Legalize all drugs and tax the heck out of them (like we do for cigarettes and alcohol). Then provide support for those who get addicted and want to quit. No housing or special treatment, other than mental health for those that need it, just like with tobacco and alcohol. Period.

I don't think the Mayor cares as the truth interferes with her agenda. If you want people to care then start posting your story on travel websites and attach it to reviews of places like the Empress and the Hotel Grand.

I thought the Mayor and council were all about urban livability?  Or was that a term coined by CARS?  Whatever.  Regardless of the traffic, it sounds like downtown is becoming less and less livable for the people who pay for its supposed upkeep.

^^maybe that's the plan? Kick everyone out of the city core and back into the suburbs, so downtown can be handed over to the poverty pimps and their ever growing collection of addicts. By forcing schools into closing (St Andrews, Christ Church next? And Ben Isitt saying a few months ago that there were too many schools downtown) the city is clearly relegating families back to the burbs while at the same time making sure they can't drive or park when they come to work downtown. Sure looks like the commies are against the working class, me thinks.

http://www.vicnews.c...tion-treatment/

“Island Health has launched a new clinic to provide support for people who use opioids and are ready for treatment and recovery.

The Rapid Access Addiction Clinic (RAAC) starts opioid users on medications, such as buprenorphone/naloxone, once a day that reduce craving for opioids and mitigate the difficult physical symptoms of opioid withdrawal… “

“…In addition to the therapy, the clinic also offers short-term counselling with the goal of promoting long-term recovery and help with connections to follow-up care, including primary care, additional counselling, mental health and substance use services and social supports….”

“The clinic is located at 1119 Pembroke St., and is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon…. “

A laudable effort, but these hours are unbelievably insufficient if the goal is to effect any meaningful change in an addicts behaviour or to promote actual recovery. Instead we'll continue to put funds towards no-barrier shelters where addicts can continue to use and abuse with no hope of ever escaping the cycle of addiction.

Scenario:

Nparker Is brutally assaulted by a drug addict and now as a result is in severe chronic pain with no choice but to result to opiates otherwise life is not livable. Nparker is not a victim?

Are you trying to suggest that the majority of persons using street-level drugs are as a result of prescription opiate addiction? What about the thousands of people prescribed opiates by medical professionals who don't become addicted? Chronic pain management through opiate use does not automatically mean one ends up on the street or living in a low-barrier homeless shelter.

I don't believe I have ever suggested that. My point is, should "victims" be left in a situation where they will never get better (low-barrier shelters where drug use is rampant) or should public funding be directed towards resources where there is a hope of recovery and living a productive life.

Okay then glad we got that sorted out.

I just wonder what the responsibility of Island Health is in all this.  They are most likely responsible for the needle.  While free needles creates harm reduction for a segment of the population, it causes harm increase for another.  They should be held accountable for all citizens, not just a segment. The only thing that will stop future harm is for Island Health to be held accountable legally for their participation.

They're focused on the real threats, like people smoking in the park.

They're focused on the real threats, like people smoking in the park.

And ensuring addicts stay addicted.
