The massing is great; the aesthetics are so-so.

Very plain and boring looking buildings - with success Chard has become complacent.

Was this in the renderings?

I was wondering about that too. Not in the renderings as far as I can tell. I'm assuming this will be corrected upon completion?

I'm assuming the same.

Though I think it's a neat little quirk too and I would be okay if it stayed. I'm not an owner though (in the Vivid instead) so maybe I would feel different in that scenario.

From what I understand about construction, this will be a tricky thing to fix. They would need to lift off the entire upper section of the building just to get the misplaced pieces out. There's a chance that the upper levels could crumble during the process, in which case those levels would need to be re-built. It could be very time-consuming and frustrating. I sure hope they kept the instructions.

Was this in the renderings?...

It seems as though the renderings for both YoY and Vivid, were more like vague suggestions rather than detailed images of what was going to get built.

What you have to watch out for is during the reconstruction process and they assume no-one is paying attention and they swap out the LEGO for Mega Blox.

That's usually the case with renderings. Larger projects typically have minor changes between the DP and BP stages. I worked on a Concord DP/BP where basically every single window was moved and the rooftop mechanical doubled in height and width...

I don't recall another recent CoV project that seems so different from the renderings.

Sure, the renderings aren't always accurate. I guess the more appropriate question becomes: do you folks think this was intended or was it just a mistake?

If intended, I wonder what the rationale was?

The entire side of that building should be glass. They needed to capitalize on the view potential - instead they have failed with very ugly paneling and walls where unlimited picturesque views should have been timelessly accessible for the YoY residents.

they probably figure that the buildings next to it are going to be torn down and be replaced with something of similar size one day. so in the future those great views will be replaced by the side of a building

Starting with the Telus complex, most likely, which you can see blocking 5/6ths of the tower’s lower levels.

They’ll be building their new digs on Douglas and there’s a good chance the Yates facility that spans across the entire block will be repurposed into something more meaningful.

Know it all.

Like I say, the tower portion would look so much better if just the top two levels have been given some distinction. I can't believe the CoV still doesn't grasp this stuff.

If we're imaging something significantly different, I'd say the feel of the podium levels should have been extended all the way up the tower, with some variation along the way. Methinks that would have looked really solid and stately, if you get my drift.

These should have been Chard's signature buildings. It's really hard to defend the featureless plain grey finish of the topmost levels on Yates-on-Yates. How can something like this happen?

Those grey panels just don't have any personality. We've talked about the potential menace of drab panels before re: the panels on the Union in Chinatown (they almost look like unfinished drywall).

Methinks the design of Escher on Broughton would have made for a great Chard tower.

One of the ground floor commercial units is a breakfast joint, according to Byron Chard during a presentation on Wednesday.  He seemed to indicate it is one that has been displaced in the recent past and is looking for a new home.  Any guesses?
