So a blocky, junior View Towers was built. What happened to the funky round buildings that were promised? Did the putting green materialize? That had to be a major attraction.

The elysian vision didn't exactly materialize, did it?

Ya, the sandy beach seems to have disappeared.

Oh for heaven's sake, we really dodged a bullet there by not building that mini marina.

Five buildings, two designs, all the same height.

You have to admit they got the Victoria formula down right.

Another view of what we ended up with.
I can see some of the area's older lowrise buildings getting knocked down in the coming decade or so.

^ when I was looking to buy my first condo on the mainland, I looked at several buildings in Burnaby that had those. They really make a big difference in strata fees.

I wonder if they actually planned on trucking in tons of sand and making an artificial beach? Or was it simply because the illustrator was from back east and had never been to Victoria and assumed all beaches had golden sand?
Why would you want sand when you can have stinky mudflats and rotten seaweed.

There's actually a sandy beach at that spot, but it's grey sand.
Well the beach is quite a bit older now than in the above rendering.

I remember walking along the Songhees Walkway many years ago, as we did often. There was an old guy who lived in one of those apartments, who would be down on the beach, raking the sea lettuce out, each time we passed. Friendly guy, and sometimes his wife would be down there humouring him, but not raking. He told me he wanted to make this beach just like Hawaii. He would take bags and bags of the seaweed out. Then one walk we didn't see him, and the sea lettuce was building up and stinking. I keep waiting for some tiki torches to appear there quite mysteriously.

After reading your story, I had to go and refresh my memory. I am going to make a point of returning at low tide.

When the dude had the sand all cleaned and raked, and the tide was out, that was a pretty decent beach. It faces south. But I'm not sure anyone ever went in swimming.
