I saw fencing around the site and an excavator parked there yesterday.

More downtown parking out of service.

Fencing has been around the site for well over a month and the parking has been out of service for just as long. Ironworks will be a much better use of space anyways.  :) I can only hope the parking lot between Fisgard and Herald is on its way soon too.

Excavation should be starting imminently, but there were a few delays.

I am betting Ironworks is finished before Northern Junk is even started (perhaps even before anything is approved for the NJ site).

I believe this project will really complete the space on the north east side of the JSB. Filling in the parking lot will create an interesting row of buildings.

Today they were carefully removing the blacktop when I walked by. Not sure where that goes, or how it’s treated differently.

Was there blacktop there? I thought it was a gravel lot?

I think there might be/have been some narrow paved sections, but most of the surface appears to be gravel* in the Google images.

* perhaps used to fill in potholes rather than re-paving since the lot was slated for development

Yah, I guess it was just a section then as there was a pile of asphalt, and an excavator right around that arrow in Nparker’s pic peeling it off.

I wonder if this site is mostly clay or will blasting be required to remove bedrock?

WRT cranes, in every major city in China there are hundreds of cranes erected over building projects in various stages of construction. Most of them are idle. Most of the construction people are rural farmers who have gone home to harvest their crops. They will come back and work through the winter then leave again in the spring to plant their crops. It really is amazing the scope of the projects being built, massive block long high rises 80 stories tall, everywhere.

The Hong Kong residents call them tofu skin, i.e. they look good and go up fast, but will fall down during the first good storm.

I've been to several big Chinese cities and the scale of construction is insane. And they aren't stopping. You go to the outskirts and there are tons of future neighborhoods with roads and utilities already good to go, just waiting for the signal to build high rises. I doubt their approach will change, considering how much of an utter cluster**** South Asian and Sub-Saharan cities growing like Chinese ones are turning out to be.
