This project is such a welcome addition to this part of the city. I just hope I live long enough to see all of the dreadful surface parking lots in the area similarly transformed.

There's a BP in progress (i.e. received but not issued) for a new gym and coffee shop. Dunno when the application was received so I have no idea if that's a current proposal or not.

I wonder how many decades will pass before something is built adjacent to Ironworks' south facade?

^ In Old Town? A crappy, unremarkable two floor falling down "heritage" building? It'll likely sit there for decades - unchanged, in that condition and will be permitted to continue disintegrating because...well....heritage.

I really do hope Iron Works is a catalyst and a precursor of what is to come for Old Town - what should be a slam dunk in terms of the type of development that is approved in future. Right now that entire area north of the core, from Wharf to Douglas Street, needs a re-do in the worst way. That area has the potential to be something really special as long as Victoria doesn't fall back into its typical 'lets be ordinary and not dare to be innovative' mindset.

Unfortunately, that's probably what it's going to get.

This is only phase one of the Ironworks five phase plan.

So a few years ago while travelling in Washington we came across this hotel that was clad in bare steel and left to rust. I found it quite striking and although the facade would not be to everyone’s liking, it stuck with me as being unusual and that perhaps that type of finish might fit in our “old town” district.

Then I saw Brantastic’s sideways picture of the Ironworks and had to go down and have a look for myself. Sure enough I guess Chris Le Fevre thinks the same way I do. I love the rust.

Some bold aesthetic choices were made here and they completely work.

Perfect fit. But, again with the friggin telephone poles! Would be nice to see a small fund put aside with a yearly budget to gradually remove them from downtown, even if it takes 20 years.

The wires already underground, the poles are fake to give it an authentic industrial vibe.

In a housing crisis would it make sense to introduce even more bureaucracy to the cost of housing?

Can't wait to see this project completed...super cool. Wish we had more variety like this in Victoria.
