Over the years I see a lot of mixed opinions on what would be acceptable as additions to Victoria's architectual collection. Please post an example of what you, as a Vibrant Victoria poster would like to see. Buildings that are not to tall or to wide or to thin. Acceptable buildings that won't mess with the cities charm. This is one I would like to see on the Norther Junk site ...

It's an interesting design, but being right on the edge of the harbour would block everyone's view and sun....

Not if you were standing on the other side of it. I have found that even a one floored building blocks my view of the other side ...

So true. I stood one block from Christ Church Cathedral on Fort Street and I could neither see it nor the "sky blocking" monstrosity that is the Escher building over the 1-2 storey buildings directly in front of me.

Interesting. I'm working on a piece for Citified right now on the costs associated with design, architectural restrictions given the market environment, etc.

Know it all.
Citified.ca is Victoria's most comprehensive research resource for new-build homes and commercial spaces.

See all those buildings in the background of your featured building, we don't have any of those. A building of that mass would look totally out of place IMO.

Yup, you are totally 100% bang on right with both your points ... but please post a picture of something that would be acceptable to "you", but please, not made out of wood.

I would actually love to see an observation tower similar to the great 1960s style of the Space Needle.

It's a boxy widescraper. It would probably get approved by our current CoV administration, even though it's butt-ugly.

I like the funkiness. There is too much conservative design here (Victoria, conservative - hah!).

I would like something like this

talkcondo-new-condos-in-toronto-ten-york

Maybe one of these

yonge-rich-render.jpg

And something totally funky like this

picasso-render1.jpg

Our Victoria versions wouldn't be as tall, mind you, but we need something different than 15 floor condo buildings with lots of stucco, balconies and red brick.

Taller and slimmer, perhaps with some curves or non-90 degree angles. I also have a preference for tall buildings that step back as their height increases. The Empire State Building and Burj Khalifa for example.

on a smaller, more appropriate scale of course.
