So when is the province going to start institutionalizing these poor souls? Ebby promised to open facilities in the last election and that seems to have been forgotten.

Statistics Canada has released its latest batch of data on popular baby names, as some of the same chart-topping choices continue to dominate the lists for boys and girls alike.

For the ninth year running, Olivia is Canada’s most popular name for girls, chosen by parents or guardians 1,639 times in 2024. Olivia has ranked within the top 10 baby names since 2000.

As for boy’s names, Noah has topped the list for the fourth straight year as of 2024, enjoying a top-10 slot since 2005. The StatCan data shows that 2,115 baby boys were given the name last year.

Except when you put in all the different spellings here:

Muhammed or another spelling version it's about 1,500.    So it's #3 or so for boys.

50-year immigration wait stuns lawyers and families, but IRCC says it's no mistake

Lawyers wonder if 'shocking' data linked to possible plan to erase backlog under Bill C-12

Families who recently applied for permanent residence (PR) under Canada’s humanitarian and compassionate stream face waits of 12 to 600 months, according to the new immigration minister’s May 2025 "transition binder".

Other economic immigration programs list similar waits:

  • Up to 108 months (nine years) for the caregivers pathway.
  • Up to 228 months (19 years) for the agri-food stream.
  • Up to 420 months (35 years) for entrepreneurs under the startup visa stream.

Lawyers say these skyrocketing processing times published by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) are unheard of, and some fear mass cancellation of applications if the Liberal government passes its strong borders bills, which would grant the minister sweeping new powers.

Almost half of all babies born in B.C. last year were to mothers who were born outside of Canada, according to a new Statistics Canada study that shows the role of immigration in sustaining the province’s population and birthrate.

But experts said that while new arrivals clearly boost B.C.’s population, they quickly take on the fertility patterns of the Canadian-born population due to some of the same factors responsible for the province’s declining birthrate, including affordability.

“I’m sure these factors are at play in Metro Vancouver,” said University of B.C. professor emeritus David Ley.

He explained that studies in places with very low fertility rates, including Singapore and Hong Kong, have shown affordability issues “loom large” in fertility behaviour.
