Eyewitnesses have recently reported seeing a large creature swimming in the murky depths of Cameron Lake, situated between Port Alberni and Parksville along Highway 4.

A team of researchers, according to the CBC, took to the waters last Saturday and their equipment had indeed come upon something that they believed to be a large animal. But due to equipment failure their expedition ground to a halt.

The speculation is the animal may be a giant sturgeon, a large eel or a massive salamander. The team will be back this summer.

Eyewitness reports of something in the lake have been around for several years. Back in 2009 a recovered mystery "carcass" proved to be nothing more than a lily root, but people maintain something large lives in the lake.

River otters should always be high on the list of suspects. As abundant as they are over much of North America, a lot of people still aren't familiar with them. When otters swim in groups it can sometimes be difficult to determine exactly what you're seeing. And the largest individuals can be impressively large.

A post like that adds aught to the discussion. It doesn't kelp matters at all. Try to be more Steller next time.

I sense an undercurrent of frustration here.
