They don't use a chip/pin system for credit cards yet either, of course.

There isn't really anything inherently safer about having not using a PIN for a CC (it only really protects against using a physically stolen card before it's been reported), and I'm sure it would slow things down a bit (significantly, I dunno).

RE, Tap - that won't work if the charge is over $100. So if you have 2 passengers, its going to be too much, and you'd have to use a PIN.

how about have one debit line. you choose that form you might have to suffer a bit of a line. but it’s still hard to know how the pin thing is the breaking point. almost no other retailer feels the same.

^ it does depend on your card/provider, but most have a default limit of 100. I think you can get it changed.

Because Costco assumes the liability from $100-200. The card issuers have set their liability threshold for tap at $100.

Tap cannot be enabled unless chip & pin is also enabled.

If your bank supports >$100 on your card.

My bank card is set to $100 max, but my phone (which is connected to the same account) can go above that (although I don't know what the limit might be).  I assume that's because the phone has it's own authentication before you can tap it.

this all sounds fine.

B.C. Ferries has unveiled a vision of a renewed Swartz Bay ferry terminal that could include a waterfront boardwalk, a larger berth and a variety of improved amenities for both foot and vehicle passengers.

https://www.timescol...-bay-1.23668755

but wouldn't a good policy be getting one or two more ships.  with the goal being that you try to get cars and passengers onto the ship as soon as they arrive at the terminal even if the ship does not leave for 45 minutes?  or perhaps that's the most expensive per-passenger time at the terminal when a loaded ship is fully crewed.

also thinking about smart driving cars loading onto a ferry might be a hard part of the infrastructure to figure out.

They are adding a 12th vessel to the major routes. I imagine it may slot into the odd hours currently missed at peak season.

We are getting ready to build new ferries to replace four of our existing vessels (Queen of Alberni, Queen of New Westminster, Queen of Coquitlam, and Queen of Cowichan). This is one of the biggest projects BC Ferries has ever undertaken

so would they just keep all those running until the 2nd new ship arrives?

Not a good week for ships and their associated infrastructure in the Salish Sea. In any case, BC Ferries says service between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale will not resume until 5:30 p.m.

The Kahloke replaced the Klitsa on the Brentwood Bay - Mill Bay route on Sunday.  Apparently they had to do a few repairs to the Brentwood dock to accomodate her.

I assume the Klitsa is off for re-fit / maintenance?  Or maybe it has something to do with this?

https://www.saanichn...rawn-trap-line/

Interestingly enough, her last known position on Marine Traffic was just outside Puget Sound.

Although the Kahloke can only take 2 more cars, she sure looked bigger than the Klitsa when we watched her pull into the Brentwood dock on Sunday evening.

The Spirit of Vancouver Island is expected to sail into B.C. Ferries’ refit facility in Richmond on Wednesday, a little over a month after it left Poland, where it was converted to run on liquefied natural gas rather than diesel only.

i suspect there will be lots of talk.  then if not nixed by horgan it'll be implemented and go off with no hitch or noticeable effect.  but some people will go nuts first.  since this is bc.

washington state has had beer on ferries for over 25 years.

This is interesting. It may also have implications for all the impaired driving charges for 'care and control', the charges that are laid when someone isn't driving, but has care and control over their car such as at a party.

that's nearly an urban myth.  extremely rare i think.  and it's civil not criminal the rare time it has occured.
