As ridership continues to plummet due to the COVID-19 pandemic, BC Ferries is suspending service along some major routes and cutting sailings on other routes. All sailings between Nanaimo and Horseshoe Bay are cancelled, as well as trips between Mill Bay and Brentwood Bay. Regular trips between Tsawwassen, Duke Point and Swartz Bay are reduced to only four sailings a day, along with many other reductions in service for other ferry destinations.
So that's a thing now.

Full press release from BC Ferries is here: https://www.bcferrie...a8497ce0f3976f7
The release includes details on what times boats will run, and also mentions that there will be four Duke Point-Tsawwassen runs for cargo only in addition to the four sailings open to the public.

It looks like the Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen is still being run by two ships, but one based in Tsawwassen runs the mornings, and one based in Swartz Bay runs the afternoons.
I couldn't figure out why Tsawwassen had both the earliest and latest ferry operating times and why the intervals were inconsistent.

^Yup, Tsawwassen-based crew starts at 7:00 AM and ends at 3:00 PM covering 4 sailings (TS>SB>TS>SB>TS), and then Swartz Bay crew starts at 3:00 PM and ends at 11:00 PM covering 4 sailings (SB>TS>SB>TS>SB).

tc seems to have missed at least half the story.
The changes include reducing the major routes (Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen and Tsawwassen-Duke Point) to four round trips a day from eight, adding four cargo-only round trips between Tsawwassen and Duke Point.
Service on the Langdale-Horseshoe Bay route will be reduced to six round trips a day from eight.
Service on the northern and mid-coast ferry routes will continue to operate at the current levels, and the summer direct service from Bella Coola to Port Hardy will not be introduced at this time.
Changes to routes between Tsawwassen, the southern Gulf Islands and Swartz Bay have yet to be finalized.
All other service remains unchanged.

tc seems to have missed at least half the story.
What did they miss? Seems like only the mention of Mill Bay-Brentwood Bay...
From the BC Ferries release: "The remaining routes and schedules are unchanged for now."

From Jackerbie's link:
Metro Vancouver – Vancouver Island
The three routes operating between Metro Vancouver – Vancouver Island will change as follows:
Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay will operate with four departures from each terminal daily from the present eight:
o Swartz Bay: 9 am, 1 pm, 3 pm and 7 pm
o Tsawwassen: 7 am, 11 am, 5 pm, 9 pm
Tsawwassen – Duke Point route will operate with four departures open to the public from each terminal daily from the present eight:
o Tsawwassen: 7:45 am, 12:45 pm, 5:45 pm, 10:45 pm
o Duke Point: 5:15 am, 10:15 am, 3:15 pm, 8:15 pm
Tsawwassen – Duke Point route will also operate with four CARGO ONLY departures from each terminal Monday through Friday. These sailings are reserved for the movement of commercial goods and essential service workers, and the schedule Monday through Friday is:
o Tsawwassen: 5:15 am, 10:15 am, 3:15 pm, 8:15 pm,
o Duke Point: 7:45 am, 12:45 pm, 5:45 pm, 10:45 pm
Horseshoe Bay – Nanaimo route has been suspended until further notice, and it will be re-evaluated based on demand. This route carries much less commercial traffic than the other two routes connecting Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island. Commercial traffic is the priority right now to move essential goods to Vancouver Island. Alternate travel is available on the Metro Vancouver (Tsawwassen) to Nanaimo (Duke Point) route.
Customers with bookings on cancelled sailings will be automatically refunded. Those who wish to book on a new sailing may contact BC Ferries directly to do so.
Metro Vancouver – Sunshine Coast
Horseshoe Bay – Langdale route will operate with six departures from each terminal daily from the present seven:
o Langdale: 6:20 am, 8:40 am, 10:50 am, 3:15 pm, 5:25 pm, 7:40 pm
o Horseshoe Bay: 7:30 am, 9:45 am, 11:55 am, 4:20 pm, 6:35 pm, 8:45 pm
Customers with bookings on cancelled sailings will be automatically refunded. Those who wish to book on a new sailing may contact BC Ferries directly to do so.
Metro Vancouver – Southern Gulf Islands
Changes will be coming to the Tsawwassen – Southern Gulf Islands route. Details are currently being finalized and will be announced soon.
Brentwood Bay to Mill Bay
This route has been suspended until further notice, and it will be re-evaluated based on demand. The Malahat highway allows an alternative for customers to travel between these two areas by vehicle.
Northern Routes
For northern and mid-coast communities, BC Ferries will continue to operate at the current off-peak (winter) service levels. This means the Northern Expedition will travel between Port Hardy – Prince Rupert and Prince Rupert – Skidegate. The summer direct service from Bella Coola to Port Hardy will not be introduced at this time. Instead, service to these communities will continue to be provided by the Nimpkish and Northern Expedition. Customers with reservations on affected sailings will be notified by mid-May. For more information on the revised Northern schedules, please visit bcferries.com/schedules.
Other routes
The remaining routes are unchanged at this time. BC Ferries continues to work with the Province to determine what those service levels will be. We will update you with any changes.

With traffic down by close to 80 per cent across its network, B.C. Ferries estimates it is losing between $1.25 million and $1.5 million each day.
“We can’t keep that up if we are ever going to have a ferry company to come back to when this is all over,” said Collins.
B.C. Ferries will have to review plans to invest in terminal upgrades and new vessels.
“We have an ambitious program to reinvest in the ferry service and this will change everything. We are re-evaluating all capital commitments.”
Collins said that will include everything but the five vessels that are under construction. “We can’t continue to needlessly absorb $1.5 million losses without a purpose,” he said. “We want to protect our people and stop the losses to have a robust and resilient ferry system when all this is over.”
Collins said the cuts will not offset all financial losses, and the corporation will still be under pressure so they will look at accessing some of the relief programs provided by governments.

The union representing B.C. Ferries workers is gathering evidence in order to file a grievance after the company started laying off employees Saturday.
Graeme Johnston, president of the B.C. Ferry and Marine Workers Union, said Ferries started calling his members Saturday morning to inform them they had been laid off.
“No notice, no pay, but B.C. Ferries will give an employee $500 if and when recalled,” he said, calling the extent to which the company is disregarding its obligations under the collective agreement staggering.
_____________________
The plan is to ask B.C. Ferries to go to arbitration immediately, Johnston said, though he expects they will refuse, and then they will take the fight to the Labour Relations Board and ask for an expedited hearing given the severity of the circumstances.
“And then we will litigate like crazy,” he said, though he believes the union’s willingness to fight will be cold comfort to those employees no longer getting paycheques.
“Over the years, I was under the impression B.C. Ferries viewed its people differently than the likes of Amazon or other ‘disposable workforce’ employers. Clearly, I was wrong,” Johnston added in a written statement.

B.C. Ferries will start screening passengers for COVID-19 symptoms or recent international travel before allowing people to board.
Anyone who has flu-like symptoms or has returned from abroad within the previous two weeks will be denied boarding, said B.C. Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall.
