B.C. Ferries will cancel two sailings on its busiest route Saturday and is considering cancelling four other sailings between Swartz Bay and the Southern Gulf Islands due to crew shortages.

Can’t they just move their operation to a more central location? Like departures out of Langford instead of from North Saanich? That might help with employee retention.

I don’t think this is news any more.

Did they recently announce they are hiring like 500 people?
Ah they just did a hiring fair...

I'm still waiting for someone to realize Langford has no ports, and my comment was in jest.

I swear this casual attitude towards work and work attendance is not good.
The staffing crisis erupted during the pandemic, according to a B.C. Ferries submission to the commission four weeks ago. Mandatory vaccinations prompted some people to leave and the corporation saw increased levels “in workforce anxieties and physical sick time, with an increased number of mental-health leaves, short-term disability claims and increased sick leave.
“Claims rose from an average of 200 any one time to more than 500.”
Complaints, misconduct cases, disagreements and departures increased, it said.

4500 employees and at any given time 500 are off work.

But if you think God doesn’t care about your work ethic and you work for bc ferries with union protection, the rational choice is to maximize sick days and skip work when your feelings are hurt.
It’ll get worse.

I'm not sure if it's Christian values. But general moral values might be lacking a bit.
Employees can be motivated, and individuals have different motivations.
In most positive workplaces, a good work ethic is rewarded in some way. Or in a range of ways, to suit most. Maybe that's lacking at BCF.

Indeed. Just like the residents of Atlin, 619 km from the nearest terminal.

Definitely. The old saying holds true - people don’t quit jobs, they quit managers.

It goes hand-in-hand with my contribution to the K-12 education system which I haven't had any use for in almost 40 years and the medical system that I can barely access. I am the perfect taxpayer.

If you don’t live on the peninsula, it’s quite the trek. The transportation costs alone run into the high hundreds for someone commuting 5 days a week from Langford, and you rack up your mileage, with frequent oil changes and higher maintenance costs.
For someone living on the West Shore, it’s a 40-50km commute one way. If a worker lives in Sooke (and many do) it’s 65-70km one-way.
