Environment Minister Catherine McKenna has asked the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada to look at how to address concerns with historical figures like John A. Macdonald, whose role in establishing residential schools has made him a polarizing figure in reconciliation efforts with Indigenous Peoples.
"I've tasked them to look at how do you have a thoughtful way with addressing concerns with certain people in our history, but you can't erase history," McKenna said.
"I personally believe that it's important that we recognize our history — the good and bad — and that we tell stories, because it's by telling stories we recognize that we can do better."
McKenna's perspective seems in keeping with the recommendation of Sen. Murray Sinclair, the former chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, who has suggested that tearing down statues is "counterproductive" to reconciliation because it "smacks of revenge."
Victoria City Hall's statue of Sir John A. MacDonald could be on the move

This whole "City Family" thing is just....weird.
Yeah, I hadn't heard of it until this fiasco came along. How did they pick this "family"?
I think we need to sort this out before "the family" has it's next reunion.

I don't think anyone had heard of the "family". I can't help sniggering over something like The Godfather.

They created the "family" through an in-camera process just over a year ago. From what I can tell, Helps orchestrated the campaign and selected the members.
You wouldn't have heard of it as the process was hidden from public view.

Helps frames these decisions "the Family" made as something she or the city has no control over. "The Family" chose to remove the statue. There was no going back. Nobody questions The Family. Nobody.

Well you can't really question them if you don't know what they are up to until after the decision has been made.

Feel free to create a thread. There are a few folks with strata experience around here who may be able to point you in the right direction.
Sebberry has given us a ‘green light’ to create a new thread, re: Strata Grievances.

Which means no one questions Helps because she is the head of the family.

An excellent article by the artist that created the JAM statue, John Dann. Really makes you think of the statue in a different light and in my opinion really highlights the dichotomy of artist as a creator vs the subject of what they create.
Just made me think, if it were a Rodin would it have been removed? Have we put too much emphasis on the who the statue is vs the what the artist was trying to present.

Re: “City council must regain the confidence of citizens,” comment, Aug. 14.
Too late, Coun. Pamela Madoff. Your crocodile tears fool no one. You knew the motion to be fraudulent, but voted for it anyway. Now you must pay the price. Out, out, out with you and the other seven.
By the way: You did not do the right thing in the wrong way. You did the wrong thing because you listened to the false voices and to your own vanity — instead of to the voices of those you supposedly represent.
You did not even let them speak. If you had, the falsity of your reasoning would have been exposed. That is why you “progressives” always try to stifle the “conversation.”
When it takes place, the irresistible weight of reality is brought to bear, and your feeble notions are exposed for the chimera they are: rainbows and unicorns. So you call them racist. Yes, I’m looking directly at you, Ben Isitt.
Away with you! Begone! Let your disgrace be a lesson to others.
Oct. 20 cannot come soon enough.

Except she's not going to pay the price, and neither will Isitt. There's basically zero chance they both don't get re-elected, assuming they do run of course.

"This was the accepted thinking of the time, backed by government and church alike. In their opinion, at best, they were “savages” since they had not “God,” awareness of their “wealth,” nor the sense or ability to exploit it."
This has been an issue time untold. That what one does in a specific time is because of need to bring and follow their "God".
It was not JAM who did these things, but the teachings and beliefs of his time. Nothing more, nothing less. How does one look back and proclaim someone a racist, when at that time all believed those without "God" where savages?
Hindsight is hindsight, and we can judge the actions of a man, not by the actions, but by the burdens and beliefs of society at that time. Back then, you would not be able to proclaim yourself a non believer without being shunned or worse. You had to believe to fit into society. You had to believe to be a part of society.
I have always asked, if development of life had occurred in North America instead of Europe, and people would of travelled from here, to there and found the same "savages" would the outcome have been any different?

Does this remind anyone of certain processes at work in the CoV today?
