Young lays down a smack down:

“We started off by talking about how we’re going to get public input and before the sound has echoed through the chamber, Coun. Isitt and Mayor [Lisa] Helps are already determining that their preference is to give it to the province and we’re costing it on that basis,” Young said.

“The idea of getting public input is you get the public input and then you make the decision. It’s not you make the decision and then you get the public input to support it,” he said.

Here’s another gem, this time from councillor Isitt who suddenly decides a municipal council has no business meddling in what should be a provincial or federal affair.

“It was probably a mistake for the city to accept the statue in the first place. We were assuming a provincial and federal responsibility in terms of telling the very complicated story of Canada and British Columbia. That’s not a municipal responsibility,” he said.

The hypocrisy runs deep with this one:

“It was probably a mistake for the city to accept the statue in the first place. We were assuming a provincial and federal responsibility in terms of telling the very complicated story of Canada and British Columbia. That’s not a municipal responsibility,” [Isitt] said.

But writing letters to Vladimir Putin and suing oil companies IS a municipal responsibility?  :whyme:

Edit: you beat me to it Mike.

Their level of incompetence is astounding. There are no words. They are literally incapable of addressing even the simplest matters.

to me it just looks and sounds like yet another excuse.. they don't want to deal with it so lets hand it off and let it become someone else's problem.. did they not say that it was a gift to the city and they wouldn't give it away when another city offered to take it off their hands?

and ofcourse the voice of reason

“The idea of getting public input is you get the public input and then you make the decision. It’s not you make the decision and then you get the public input to support it,” he said.

in typical helps manner say that they would consult when the time was right.. don't consult, make the decision behind closed doors then after the fact let people speak and ignore the what the people say if it doesn't agree with her personal dialogue and choice...

Historical Significance

Towering over Nanoose Bay for over 21 years (almost two-thirds as long as the John A. Macdonald statue had been on city hall’s steps) Howard originally appeared as part of a family-run amusement park but has been situated at a gas station since its closure.

However, after the people of Vancouver Island caught wind of the gnome’s plight, they banded together, raised money, and recently found him a new home: Galey Farms.

But before Howard could make the move to Saanich, a new bid came in from Victoria’s Municipal Government.

“We got an offer we couldn’t refuse,” said the Gnome’s representative, Lonni Flamingo.

Now, instead of living a relaxed farming life, the gnome will become an iconic downtown Victoria landmark!

The Philadelphia Flyers remove a statue of Kate Smith over her racist songs

A year after her 1986 death, the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers erected a statue to honor renowned singer Kate Smith, whose rendition of "God Bless America" was played during home games for decades, including the 2018-2019 season.

But on Sunday the Flyers announced they had removed the statue, saying the team had discovered some of her songs contained racist lyrics and sentiments that were "incompatible" with the organization's values.

The City is refusing to broadcast the City Family presentation this morning at the COTW meeting "out of respect for indigenous practices". So much for transparency.

Out of respect for Indigenous practices this segment of the meeting will not be webcast.

After the fiasco with the statue, the Mayor apologized and then promised more transparency in the City Family process. At the very first opportunity thereafter, she pulls a similar stunt and blocks the public from viewing the presentation. From what I can tell, the decision was made at the last minute so had you been hoping to watch it online, you would have had no opportunity to get to City hall on time to see it either.
