Sorry, you’re more disgusted by the destruction of some fibreglass than by child marriage?

If "child" marriages hadn't been more or less the norm at the time, I would be more disgusted.

I don’t think a 60 year old should be able to marry a 20 year old that’s disgusting but legal.

How about a 70 year old and 30 year old?

Honestly I find the idea of marriage bit disgusting. Seems like a high-risk venture most end in loss of profit. Most likely invented as a trick to prevent disease from spreading.

The entire case against this guy which warrants his cancelling is based on one interview in which the interviewer even stated she was difficult to understand.  The lady herself has given a variety of ages to different people over the decades.

It would seem that Lisa Helps version of Reconciliation is going well.

So presumably this statue will be pulled down for the same reasons the Jack Deighton statue was toppled?

From Hopper’s thread:

The account of Maquinna's wives comes from John Jewitt, one of Maquinna's white slaves (c 1800): "The chiefs purchase their wives at the age of eight or ten, to prevent their being engaged by others, though they do not take them from their parents until they are sixteen."

In fairness FN considered slaves to be personal property so many of those slaves may have been passed down to him from family and he did not necessarily acquire all of them himself through war and mayhem.

It wasn't until the British forced the FN to stop the practice of slavery did it end. I wonder if that should be an acknowledgement at public meetings.

I suppose this form of slavery is going to be viewed through the equity lens; The guy just acquired the slave as part of family property so it's not his fault.  Would a white polygamist wait until his latest wife was 16 before taking her from her family?  See how gracious slavery can be when done right?

Comox artist Brian Scott will have his paintings removed from BC Hydro boxes after one of his recent works showed a red swastika painted on a hat.

The art in question is a painted hat with a red swastika that was painted prominently on the front.

Scott posted it on his social media, writing “paint anything for money, vets of WW2 would not approve.”

That sparked outrage among many online and caught the attention of Town of Comox Mayor Russ Arnott, who said that kind of hatred is not tolerated in the community and that Scott’s other paintings on BC Hydro boxes will be removed.

“We don’t want to be associated with that kind of hatred,” said Arnott. “There’s enough going on in the world right now, we don’t need that in our small, safe community.”

…and?

Does Mayor Helps have any plans to address the temporary move of the statue, nearly four years after it was taken down?

Know it all.

It would have been better to have secreted Lisa Helps away in the early hours of the morning and hide her in an undisclosed location for the past 4 years.

Probably best to keep it quiet so the Council post October can make a rational decision.
