TC article today says there is no re-opening date in site for the length of the trail.
Hikers and the business owners who cater to them are in limbo as another summer season approaches without an update on whether the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail will reopen.
The 47-kilometre coastal hiking trail closed following severe storms in late 2024 and early 2025 that washed out multiple sections, downed trees and destabilized slopes, leaving many areas unsafe and impassable, the Ministry of Environment and Parks said in a statement.
The trail and most of its campsites remained closed for the 2025 summer season, although campsites at Mystic Beach and East Sombrio remained open.
Damaged areas included the Circo Creek footbridge, Loss Creek crossing, Sombrio Beach suspension bridge, Sombrio west trail and campsite and Parkinson trailhead access, the ministry said.
Reconstruction is underway, with upgrades being designed to withstand future weather conditions, the ministry said, adding it expects to provide an update on the trail in the coming weeks.
Day-use areas at China Beach and Botanical Beach remain open.
Michael Anderson, owner of the West Coast Trail Express, which shuttles hikers to the West Coast and Juan de Fuca trails, said the ongoing closure is hurting his bottom line.
While most of his customers are going to the West Coast Trail, Anderson’s shuttles would normally do pickups or dropoffs along the Juan de Fuca every day between May and September while en route to the West Coast Trail, he said.
“Now we’re just driving by and nobody’s there,” he said.

The Ministry of Environment and Parks said hikers and back-country campers will have access to the full trail.
Repairs are costing an estimated $950,000, with most of the funding coming from the federal Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements program.
The 47-kilometre trail, which runs from China Beach to Botanical Beach, was closed after being damaged by severe storms in late 2024 and early 2025.
