The only safe place for this waste is in deep space... where's Elon Musk when you need him?!?

 

Wouldn't it be easier to send it into the sun? Gravity is your friend on that journey.

Funny you should mention this as I recalled reading an article in Astronomy magazine about a year ago on this very topic. Did quick search and found the same item reprinted in Popular Mechanics.

 

It turns out, aside from the fact that rockets occasionally explode on the launch pad and indeed even before achieving low earth orbit - which would be very bad if it carried nuclear waste, especially for the folks living in the immediate area - that the mechanics of space flight, thrust and orbital dynamics make it virtually impossible to shoot stuff at our sun, much as you would think it would be a comparatively simple thing to do:
