Local Bands and Local Music in General

Anyway, I have been listening to a lot of music lately even thoug I know I'm pretty narrowminded when it comes to music. I usually just go for mainstream stuff. The point I'm getting at is that I really like Armchair Cynics. I have their album "Killing the Romance" which I've had for close to a year now. It is a great album even though it has only 7 songs on it. I saw them in Edmonton at Ed Fest and they really got the crowd going. You may have heard their singles "Bang," "Coalmine," and "Surprise Ending" on the Zone.
Another good local band is Theset. Now, I like them, but also my cousin is one of the guitarists in the band. They're kinda screamo, but still, pretty good. They were the Zone's Band of the Month sometime last year, I can't remember when. They also have a music video that has aired on MuchMusic but I think it was only once...at like 12am... Anyway, this is their website: http://www.thesetistruth.com/ and i would give the Myspace site but Myspace is being a dink right now and I can't get into my account to get their address...I think it maybe http://www.myspace.com/thesetband The only reason why I'm mentioning myspace is because they have some of their songs loaded on it plus their music video.
So yes, tell me more about local bands that I've never heard of! And no, not Nelly Furtado even though she's frickin' hot...or David Foster who is a big douche.

Dude, who's your cousin in theset? I hang out with those guys sometimes. I'm not really a fan of that type of music but they're probably the biggest local band at the moment, and extremely popular in Kelowna for some reason. Oh yeah, and they're cool guys.
My favourite local band at the moment is Jets Overhead... you'd remember them Jarrod since they opened up for Our Lady Peace. I hope they go places, they' amazing.
My favourite local band that doesn't exist anymore is Black Tie Social... by far. Check out their myspace to hear their stuff. They had a shitty music video on MuchMusic for awhile (that I was in! ).
Oh yeah, another local group to look out for is Maurice. I know he's been around forever but he just started touring with a renewed band.

Okay, a couple more local bands...
Velvet play at Steamer's every Thursday night and I absolutely love them. Their bass-player (Rick May) is probably the best on the island... and their singer (Kuba) is amazing.
Shapes & Sizes were recently signed to the label Asthmatic Kitty, operated in part by Sufjan Stevens. Good things could be ahead for this local band.

What kind of music is it? Just wondering so I know what to expect.

I went to high school with the bass player but the rest of the band is from England. They put on an awesome show and I think they're one of the top bands in a Battle of the Bands comp currently in the works across town.

funny things is I've been to Adam Sutherland's (armchair cynics) house and watched the brothers play as part of Limestone in the basement. The occasion was the birthday party of their little kid sister. His mom and dad are pretty cool people for older (but not old) folks.

Adam's room is weird, he has a tank of pet shrimp right next to thousands of dollar's worth of recording equipment. The funny thing is, I think he treasures his shrimp more than the equipment.

I'm not sure how to classify it really, sexy jazz-rock? You know, the best way to describe it is to think of actual velvet in the form of music... that's how they sound. That's awesome! I should check out Velvet. I think I've heard of them.

Get yourself some Outlaw Social.
I believe I do!
Their EP looks familiar.
I have hundreds of CDs on shelves I have yet to go through. I believe it's in my collection.
I'll try to locate it.
Thanks!

RIP Mike. Solid man.
I was going to say filmed at Darcy's but I don't think they have that big light rig. Upstairs Lounge maybe? I forget what the bar there might looks like.
I met Mike years ago, always the nicest guy.
I've been in a few clubs over the years. That rig does look familiar but I can't place it.
