Crime in the Capital Region is down between 2015 and 2016, and sharply down between 2006 and 2016, according to the latest Canada Census data released by Statistics Canada.

Victoria's Census Metropolitan Area that includes thirteen municipalities between Sooke and North Saanich saw 5,689 total incidents of crime as reported by police and not including traffic-related infractions. The statistic represents a drop of 6% between 2015 and 2016, albeit the total still surpassed a 5,224 national average. Between 2006 and 2016 local crime decreased by 42% (28% nationwide).

However, despite a year-over-year 4% drop for the category of violent crime, the Capital Region’s incident rate of 1,153 per 100,000 individuals is higher among all census metropolitan areas of the province (Abbotsford, Kelowna and Vancouver) listed in Statistic Canada’s data release. By comparison, Kelowna saw a violent crime incident rate of 941 last year, followed by Vancouver with 958 and Abbotsford with 1,146. The Canadian average is 1,052, and all but a handful of smaller regions registered below Victoria.

The region fared better in terms of property crime, with an incident rate of 3,663, placing it last among its BC cohort although well above the national average of 3,207. Drug offences in Victoria were second from the bottom at 248 with Abbotsford posting 224 and Kelowna topping the list with 691. Vancouver’s figure is 381 while the national average is 263. VV
