I'd never heard of this place either ... and just visited it on Google Maps.
Very interesting, definitely not the Richmond folks think about today.

Proof also that building inspectors can be held at bay by "grandfathering". Check those rickety boardwalks.

Yah, it's a bit of a rabbit hole for anyone interested in property law! The island is owned by a guy in Ontario, but most of the structures are built on the foreshore, which is Crown land and therefore under Provincial authority, not City of Richmond. Apparently things are also complicated by holdover squatter's rights. I've only ever "visited" in Google Maps.
