Of course, you also have to be able to afford to buy and insure a new-ish car.  Last I checked, you could only drive for Uber with a car newer than than five years old.

They will lease or rent you one!

That’s what Uber wants you to think, but it doesn’t work that way.

In my experience there are two types of Uber drivers. The first group are the ones doing it for extra cash to buy a TV or take a vacation. The smart ones use surge pricing periods to maximum their income over the few hours that they drive during a week. Those seem to be the outliers though, most of the drivers I meet are pounding in hours to make as much as they can. On an hourly basis they may only be making slightly more than minimum wage but when you are working 80-100 hours a week it adds up!

This my personal situation. Due to the nature of my job I am often on the peninsula or the westshore heading into town. For example, I'll often a show a property in North Saanich or Sidney and then I'll stop at my favorite restaurant in Maria's Soulvaki. I'll have a chicken soulvaki and a greek salad and then I'll drink my diet code for 10-15 minutes after. Why not turn on the Uber app when I am done eating and either something comes up at the airport or in Sidney or it doesn't. If it doesn't who cares.

The other part is I have lifetime free charging on my Tesla and I am also trying to pile on the miles in an attempt to kill the battery (and get a new one before my 8 year warranty expires) so extra miles not really an issue. At 225,000 km still on the original brake pads. Really just using up tires.

I don't know I think it would be kind of fun to try.

Ok, when you put it that way that’s actually alright.

If you can time it with large flights coming in you might be on to something.

So what’s the deal with that? I’ve been picked up in older cars many times. Like 2004 models and 2010 models, etc. Are those drivers signing up with one car then switching it out to another?

The airport currently does not allow Uber pick-ups.

Their website shows LTG as the main licensed provider, but they also display a Cabu logo on their website.

So think they’ll make it available to anyone, no? You just pay a fee as the company, right?

Same story around at many airports around the world. There are usually ways around it. In Victoria it isn't a far walk to a municipal road.

The way many airports accommodate Uber is by having a separate pickup area so they do not clog arrivals. In many cases Uber also pays a per trip fee which magically seems to alleviate all of the airport's concerns, especially when that fee tops what the taxis are paying.

As Phoenix gets ready to host the Super Bowl, Mayor Kate Gallego announced Friday that Sky Harbor International Airport will be the first to offer the self-driving ride-hailing service Waymo.

“The future is here,” Gallego said at a news conference in front of the airport’s sky train station. “Phoenix is the first airport anywhere in the world to have autonomous service bringing people to our airport.”
