^well that was bound to happen, accidents do happen. the article doesn't say much really. How many people die around the world from being hit by people actually driving cars. I can't count how many accidents I could have been in by human error alone

We took Uber for the first time last week in Seattle. Our informal poll suggests most drivers commute into downtown Seattle from outlying neighbourhoods like Tacoma and Lynnwood. A lot of retired people doing it to supplement their income. One retired ex-transportation manager started at dawn, mostly doing airport runs and finished at noon. It was amazing to fire up the app and instantly see how many Ubers are in your vicinity and how quick the response is. I don't think we waited longer than 60 seconds for a car to show up.
Our experience was excellent, with one exception--one driver seemed to take an unnecessary detour around the block driving to our destination and he was the only Uber driver we talked to that was a former cabbie. He said he drove taxi for over 20 years. I wasn't sure if he screwed up the route or he was pulling a fast one.

The cost is pre-calculated, is it not?

Yes, the driver has the opportunity to evaluate the destination to decide whether it's worth his while. For instance, a driver might accept a passenger even thought it's the end of the shift because the destination is near the driver's home.

Also had very good recent experiences with Uber in Rome.
For some reason, there is no UberX in Rome, which is the basic class of Uber. You could chose from UberBlack (mostly E-classes) and UberLux (mostly S-classes, and one insane Range Rover SVAutobiography). It wasn't really any cheaper than a cab, and probably worked out to be 2-5 euro more per trip. But it was well worth it. Drivers were generally professional chauffeurs. Service and comfort were consistently excellent.
Took 1 taxi. He drove like he was in the Fast and Furious. Car stank like cigarettes. He tried to tell me that I only gave him at 20, when I gave him a 50. Then gave me the wrong change and tried to claim 5 extra euro as a surcharge for my luggage. I had no luggage. Never thought twice about taking Uber again.
I think if it ever gets here, Victoria will only ever get UberX. Vancouver will likely get the higher levels of Uber.

This combined with union only provincial construction contracts is just stupid (only 16% of construction workers are union in BC)

“The reliance on and demand for ridesharing is growing, and BC needs to be ready for it. John Horgan and the BC NDP support the passing of new rules to introduce ridesharing to BC in 2017.”

That's terrible for everyone, NDP included. Plenty of left-leaning urbanites in the province who want ridesharing. Taxi drivers desperately trying to preserve the value of their medallions, on the other hand? Not a big voter block I'd reckon. Is Horgan somehow scared that the taxi lobby would turn on the NDP, even though no other party really supports their rent-seeking?
