In 1994 they were just wrapping up the really crappy stuff, weren't they?

I wish they'd wrapped it up in a giant garbage bag and hauled it out to Hartland.

On the plus side, the early Songhees will always serve as an example of how NOT to design an urban residential community.

I thought it was Pamela Madoff that opposes it ... which is no surprise as she is another one that goes out of her way to oppose anything that actually might be beneficial to the city as a whole.

Here is the thing however. it would be easy enough to write off Ms. Madoff if her entire claim was related to her personal design opinions. She makes a valid point however in that the Mayor's promotion of this project has focused to a large extent on the 250 jobs she claims will be created. We have all known since day one that there isn't 250 jobs, Telus is just consolidating existing offices.

Now the jobs should never have been part of the discussion but the Mayor can't help herself (IMHO). What the claim has done though is created distrust and opened an avenue for people like Ms. Madoff to expand their criticism.

Ms. Madoff is incorrect, the TELUS involvement is to consolidate 5 offices around Victoria, Saanich, and Central Saanich into one downtown office which itself is already a good thing. The design and the space they are holding is to facilitate the growth of the Victoria based team to 450 employees. It’s in the application package, always has been…

And they’ll have a tech incubator operation in the building. That’s something the tech community has been asking for.

Is that used to care for techs that arrive too early?

No it isn't! There are already several incubators in town and none are full.

The point is that this isn't creating new jobs, it is a consolidation. Now if staff are being asked to relocate from Central Saanich to downtown then I would have to think that wouldn't be very GREEN!

I am sure that the project will be approved. Not seeing any significant opposition in council.

I wonder if we will have any surprises.

It IS creating new jobs. The current workforce is 250 and there is a growth plan to get to 450 which is almost doubling the Victoria workforce.

There will be an incubator tied to their pollinator fund and a series of collaborations with ocean science, art, UVIC etc which will all generate new jobs.

I liken Telus coming in as an incubator as the maturation of Victoria. Fort Techtoria is cute, and has always had its role, but Telus is a big boy presence on the south Island.

Sounds fine to me, just build it.  I don't even know why we are dicking around, it's a city-owned site, they should have just set their design guidelines and accepted an offer that included a project within them.  Not select the "winner" then go through design contortions.

This City has to make it all so complex.
