RCMP said in a press release that a member of the detachment was doing a check of his vehicle in the detachment’s parking lot at around 6:30 a.m. when a man drove into the lot and hit the police vehicle, which was pushed into a ditch, injuring the member.

The press release said that another officer discharged his weapon at the suspect’s vehicle, hitting the man. Both the suspect and the RCMP officer were taken to hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Does the first sentence of the second paragraph come close to matching what we have already seen on the video?

Islander wanted in U.S. may be in Canada

Man from Central Saanich facing rape charge has fled Utah, documents say
  • Times Colonist
  • 12 May 2023

An arrest warrant has been issued for a University of Utah student from Central Saanich facing sexual assault-related charges who law enforcement officials believe has fled to Canada.

The 19-year-old male has been charged with rape and forcible sodomy, first degree felonies, and forcible sexual assault, a second-degree felony, relating to an incident on Aug. 16, 2022, according to documents filed in the Third District Court in Salt Lake county in Utah.

CHEK:

...Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said Smyth was arrested upon returning to the United States this week. “It is our understanding that he is in custody in Seattle,” Gill said.

Scott Wilding, Smyth’s attorney, declined to comment on the charges or whether he had returned to surrender voluntarily or was caught when his return to the country triggered the warrant.

...Detectives also write that Smyth’s friends described him as bragging “about the number of women he has sex with,” which he compiled into a list to show others.

CRD shrugs and says it’s “very minor”, yet I bet we get freshly printed “every drop counts!” posters next week.

Every drop counts except in those situations where uncounted millions of drops are running down the drain for no purpose whatsoever. The environmental crusade is all about picking your battles.

It has been this way for a very long time. And the scammers come in all forms, peddling all sorts of ideas and concepts. It’s not just financials that are hoodwinking people into spending their money on false prophets.

Know it all.

If VicPD isn't terribly interested, I bet local Crimestoppers will be - they love dumb crimes. Sure it's only a theft beef, but it's one buddy will probably regret from a ridicule/identity POV.

B.C. police watchdog investigating incident in Duncan

British Columbia's police oversight agency is investigating an incident in Duncan, B.C., on Friday morning.

The video shows a person in a grey hooded sweatshirt exit a dark-coloured vehicle that has crashed into an RCMP cruiser, apparently forcing the police vehicle down a small embankment.

Two uniformed RCMP officers approach the person who appears to be accessing the rear passenger seat of the vehicle.

One officer can be seen drawing a weapon as the person turns toward him. A single gunshot is heard and the person falls backward onto the ground.

This morning's T-C reports that Lunden Taylor HOWARD (born 1994) has been charged w/Assault Peace Officer with Weapon. Also has charges from earlier the same day in Esquimalt for choking and breach peace bond, both domestic (K file).

Google indicates that the accused has been a male model in the past in the Qualicum area, this photo is from his Facebook page, posted February 2023:

Curious what led him to do this. Are you positive it's a K file? I didn't see that stated in the article.

‘Sheer terror’: Brazen business break-in caught on camera in Sooke

Kelz Bakery owner Kelly Busse is recalling a dramatic robbery he witnessed in Sooke Friday morning.

“I was in my vehicle here. Driver’s mirror on that side. I could look over and see the door that is missing now,” Busse said in an interview with CHEK News.

Screenshot 2023-05-16 20.32.09.png

The target is Sooke Power Supply, a power equipment store across the street from his bakery.

The thieves drove a pickup truck into the store — and it was all caught on video surveillance cameras and watched by Busse.

“Called 911 and went out and kind of hid a little bit behind my van. And talked to dispatch through the entire three-minute process until they pulled away,” he said.

“There was a zero-trim mower here. And then there was a lawn tractor on the other side. Both of those were damaged.”

Once inside, the crew of three methodically went about stealing tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment. One suspect is seen returning at least three times to grab generators from the shelves, each valued at more than $1,800.

Screenshot 2023-05-16 20.34.15.png

Store owner Wayne Smith watched the video as the thieves broke in.

“I think they were pretty brave,” he said.

“Like, brazen or however you want to call it. They have done that before. They just drove right through the door.”

The cameras inside and outside the store show exactly what the thieves did for the three minutes inside.

One suspect was tasked with loading the stolen goods into the back, while the other two targeted valuable portable chainsaws, generators, and axes.

“We were just trying to figure out if we could see who it is or get a face. Then once we found out the truck is stolen, then, of course, that all goes out the window,” Smith said.

Day parole continued for killer of Reena Virk

Kelly Ellard, who now goes by the name Kerry Marie Sim, will get another six months of day parole

kelly.png
Kelly Ellard and her father, Lawrence, leave the Vancouver courthouse in 2000.

Convicted killer Kelly Ellard has had her day parole continued for another six months.

Ellard, who now goes by the name Kerry Marie Sim, was convicted of murdering Victoria teenager Reena Virk in November 1997. Sim, now 40 and a mother of two, is serving a life sentence for second-degree murder.

In late March, the Parole Board of Canada conducted an in-office review and accepted the recommendation of the Correctional Service of Canada to continue her day parole with special conditions.

A 2016 risk assessment found Sim has a moderate to high-moderate risk of future violence, particularly over the longer term.

In its recent decision, the board noted the risk would likely increase if Sim used substances or associated with people who did.

Sim’s attitude and her personal, emotional and family orientation still require “a high need for improvement,” the board found.

Sim was granted day parole in November 2017. In 2020, she was allowed to live away from a residential facility for up to five days each week.

However, she began experiencing challenges in her personal life, including the stress of motherhood and maintaining a household.

Her day parole was suspended in August 2021 when she failed to report intimate partner violence. The parole board cancelled the suspension in October 2021.

The board noted that in the past six months, Sim has complied with her special conditions and is the primary caregiver for her two children. She is open about her relationship with her ex-spouse and her challenges in the community. She is motivated to live a pro-social life and to become more independent in the community, the parole board said.

“You remain connected to the community mental health team and are seeing a psychologist on a regular basis. There has been no indication of drug use and no concern with regard to your community associations,” the board wrote in its decision. “You are not currently employed, but are hoping to secure employment once you are able to navigate childcare options.”

Sim’s special conditions include immediately reporting all sexual and non-sexual relationships and friendships, and any changes in these relationships. She must have no contact with her ex-spouse without supervision or written consent from her parole officer and she must follow psychiatric treatment to address anxiety and mental-health issues.

Sim was 15 when she and a group of teens beat Reena Virk before she and an accomplice followed the injured girl, beat her again and drowned her in the Gorge Waterway.

Gee, I wonder why she might have mental health and anxiety issues.  Maybe because she has been featured prominently in the news for the past 25 years.

While hundreds of other murderers have been paroled and never mentioned in the media since their first sentencing.
