A 25-year-old hired to "terrorize" Punjabi singer AP Dhillon at the behest of the Bishnoi gang came to Canada four years ago on a student visa, according to court records obtained by CBC News.

But the judge who sentenced Abjeet Kingra last month for a violent September 2024 attack on the musician's B.C. (Colwood) home said the accused struggled in school and the Canadian employment market, "and in doing so failed to meet [his] family's financial needs back home, thus taking on this contract."

'Poster child for online dating scams' must repay $89k, but gets no jail time

bb.jpg

Brooks

A judge who sentenced a man on Tuesday for defrauding 14 people of a total of more than $90k called him the “poster child for online dating scams.” “I’m a judge sitting here, but I’m a member of the community, and I can tell you, it was very hard not to have that sense of my blood boiling,”

Lowe agreed to a joint sentencing submission from Crown and defence lawyers, and imposed a conditional sentence order of two years less a day that Brodie Brooks will serve in the community under house arrest, with exceptions for work, community-service hours and other activities permitted by his conditional sentence order supervisor. The sentence will be followed by 2 yrs’ probation.

Brooks was also ordered to repay the more than $89k he still owes, beginning with an immediate $6k and followed by minimum monthly instalments of $2k to be distributed to his victims by the court.

Wearing a navy suit and with his hair neatly combed, Brooks sat through the hearing clutching papers with hands that often shook.

One of two Langford men who killed 18-year-old Kimberly Proctor when they were teenagers has been denied day parole, on the grounds that he still poses a high risk to offend violently and sexually.

Kruse Hendrik Wellwood was 16 in 2010 when he and 17-year-old Cameron Alexander Moffat lured Proctor to Wellwood’s Langford home under the pretence of wanting to apologize to her for being unkind. The pair tied Proctor up, sexually assaulted her, beat her, suffocated her and mutilated her body with a knife over several hours.

Proctor’s badly burned body was found the next day beneath a bridge.

Three people randomly stabbed in downtown Vancouver's Yaletown neighbourhood's seawall.

From VanPD:

Vancouver Police are investigating a series of stabbings that occurred early this morning along the Yaletown seawall.

Just after 7:30 a.m., officers responded to reports of multiple people stabbed along the seawall near David Lam Park. Three victims were located and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect fled the area before police were called and has not yet been located. Initial evidence suggests the attacks were random and unprovoked.

The suspect is described as an Indigenous woman in her late 20s or early 30s. She is between 5’3″ and 5’7″, has a slim build, and long dark hair worn in ponytail. She was wearing a large, oversized black leather jacket, tight dark pants, and either a leopard-print shirt or scarf.

“We understand the concern this incident may cause for people in the area, particularity those who frequent the seawall,” says Constable Tania Visintin. “Public safety is our top priority and we are doing everything we can to identify and arrest the suspect as quickly as possible.”

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or anyone with relevant video footage is asked to call investigators at 604-717-7048.

‘You’re getting too old for this:’ notorious Nanaimo offender remains in jail

Oct 10, 2025

NANAIMO — A well-known offender will spend more time in jail following a rash of incidents, including assaulting two police officers.

Kym Robert Arkell, 41, was sentenced to 106 more days in jail in a Nanaimo provincial court on Wednesday, Oct. 8, after pleading guilty to several charges related to incidents from last October to March, when he was arrested and held following an axe-throwing incident where he bear-sprayed police.

arkell.png

Judge Brian Harvey said Arkell had a long and “relentless” criminal record due to a long history of drug abuse and mental health concerns.

“You’re getting too old for this type of behaviour. I understand the challenges you have, the losses you’ve had….it’ll be a short stint you’ve got to serve in custody before you can hopefully get the help you need. I encourage you to get that help, because if you don’t, you’ll likely be doing a life sentence in installments.”

While emergency personnel were responding further information was received that the homeowner and occupants were being attacked. Information provided at that time had implied someone had died but this was later determined not to be so.

Multiple RCMP members responded and the suspect was arrested and was transported to the Nanaimo Hospital.

Man found guilty of harassing ex-partner by sending incessant text messages

A man who sent a “remarkable” volume of demeaning, abusive and threatening messages to his ex-partner over 12-days wanted to inflict emotional pain on the woman, a provincial court judge said when delivering his verdict Tuesday.

Judge Pearson found Kyle Alexander Patterson guilty of criminal harassment, making harassing communication by tele-communication & breaching a release order.

Pearson viewed screenshots of messages and a 29-minute video screen grab of the text conversation between Dec. 25, 2024 and Jan. 6, 2025, showing hundreds of lines of text sent by Patterson “virtually unabated” that were almost totally unanswered by the woman.

Her intermittent responses were clearly an effort to convey to Patterson that she wanted him to stop messaging her.

Patterson threatened to beat up the woman’s new partner and at one point sent a photo of himself outside the building where her partner lived with the words: “Scared little b—— won’t even come out to play.”

The judge said the communication met the bar for the charge of making harassing communications due to the frequency and volume of the messages, the fact that the woman repeatedly asked Patterson to stop messaging her, the abusive content, including threats of violence against her new partner, and the specific wording designed to inflict emotional pain.

Patterson has not yet been sentenced.
