Accused killer describes hallucinations to Victoria trial

March 6, 2026

The trial of a man accused of killing 70-year-old Michael Jones in 2023 will likely come to an end next week following the testimony of a forensic psychiatrist.

On March 4, a toxicologist and the accused, Michael King, took the stand, telling the court about King’s mental health and relationship with drugs ahead of the incident.

Jones was found with life-threatening injuries in his Chester Ave residence on March 6, 2023. On March 15, police learned Jones died in the hospital as a result of the injuries, and King was charged with 2nd degree murder April 3, 2023.

Previously, it was reported that police found Jones seated on his bed, covered in blood on the morning of the attack. Later that day, King attended the Saanich police station, saying he was experiencing a schizophrenic episode before he was apprehended under the Mental Health Act.

The trial is expected to end in the week of March 8.

A man who admitted to striking his 70-year-old housemate in the head with a weapon multiple times suffers from schizoaffective disorder, a forensic psychiatrist testified this week at the man’s second-degree murder trial.

Michael King first showed symptoms, according to medical records, in 1999 when he was 18 years old, a typical time for the onset of the disorder, said Dr. Andriy Kolchak, who was called as a witness by King’s lawyers.

King is facing a second-degree murder charge in the death of Michael Jones, who died in hospital nine days after a March 6, 2023, attack in his bedroom at the Cook Street Village rooming home the two men shared with others.

Court previously heard that Jones was found sitting on his bed, covered in blood. He suffered five wounds to the left side of his scalp, ear and face.

DNA analysis showed Jones’s blood was on a hatchet found in King’s sink as well as on a knife in his own room, and King’s DNA was found on the handle of the hatchet, according to the admission of facts.

King’s lawyers intend to argue that his intent to cause death or bodily harm likely to cause death — an element the Crown must prove beyond a reasonable doubt — was diminished due to his psychotic symptoms, and that he should be found guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

“There were many things that he said that, to me, appear delusional. Then he finally urinated in the interview room, claiming that he peed himself, and he said that he was going to drink his urine, which he proceeded to do in front of the officers, explaining that he was pissing out nutrients that he could use in his body,” Kolchak testified.

Man sentenced to four years after CBSA finds undeclared firearms at Victoria ferry terminal

A 44-year-old foreign national has been sentenced to four years in prison after a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) investigation into undeclared firearms at Belleville ferry terminal in Victoria.

Reuben Velasquez was sentenced Feb. 3 in Williams Lake Provincial Court after being convicted of firearms-related offences, according to the CBSA.

On Sept. 1, 2023, CBSA began its investigation when Velasquez attempted to enter Canada through the Belleville ferry terminal in downtown Victoria.

Border officers referred him for further examination after he declared multiple firearms. During a search of his vehicle, officers discovered six additional firearms that had not been declared.

Velasquez was subsequently charged following an investigation by the CBSA.

Because he is a foreign national, he may be removed from Canada after completing his prison sentence and banned from returning.

That's quite the variety.  It looks like he plead guilty (why the hearing was in Williams Lake) and he likely would have had to at least state what his intentions were, in bringing in those guns.  4 years seems a bit steep, if he was just a collector, say.

Or maybe he would not state why he brought the guns in, so was given a tough sentence.

Press release from CBSA: https://www.canada.c...d-offences.html

Just like what the Americans would do in this instance: "As a foreign national, Velasquez may be subject to removal from Canada upon completion of his sentence."

Based on Tokyo and the file (CFNP: #25-36177) I'd guess it's an Armed Forces thing...

Saanich:

Saanich Police are investigating an assault that occurred on March 8 just before 6 p.m. in Colquitz Park.

A woman was walking along a trail near Roy Road when she was grabbed from behind by an unknown man. The victim screamed and fought off her attacker, who then fled into nearby bushes. Another park user heard her screams, witnessed the incident and called 911.

Major Crime Unit detectives are working to identify the suspect who is described as a Caucasian male, approximately 30 years old, six feet tall, with a medium build. He had brown hair with a brown beard and was wearing a black toque and black backpack at the time.

Investigators are asking residents in the area to review home security camera footage, and anyone who was driving along Roy Road around the time of the incident to review dash‑cam footage, for anyone matching the suspect’s description.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, was in Colquitz Park around the time it occurred, or has information that may assist investigators is asked to contact Saanich Police at 250-475-4321 and reference file number 26-4353.

The public can expect to see an increased police presence in the area as we continue to investigate.

Police Arrest One Person Following Complaints of a Person Pointing a Firearm at Passersby

March 9, 2026 - File: #26-9478

Victoria, B.C– The Victoria Police Department arrested a person Saturday, March 7, 2026 following a public complaint about a person pointing a handgun in the 600 block of View Street.

The call for assistance came in around 5:20 p.m. and was classified as “high risk” given it was occurring in a densely populated area of Victoria’s downtown core. As a result, VicPD officers and members of the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team deployed to the scene.

Upon arrival, police issued several commands to the suspect. The individual did not listen to the instructions, leading to the deployment of two less-lethal impact projectiles, ARWEN rounds. The person was then taken into custody.

Once in custody, officers determined the handgun that was reported by the public turned out to be a lighter.

The person was taken to hospital, where they refused treatment for minor injuries, and was subsequently released from custody. No criminal charges are being requested at this time.

The matter has been reported to the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner as mandated under the Police Act in cases involving injury.

May be subject, he will probably live in Canada for another 20 years before anyone notices that he is still here.

Man charged in four stranger assaults against women

11 March 2026

Vancouver – Vancouver Police are releasing the photo of a suspect in a series of stranger assaults against women in the downtown core. Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

VPD initiated an investigation on January 29, 2025, after a 44-year-old woman was assaulted by a man she didn’t know while walking near Granville and Dunsmuir Street. Over the course of several months, at least three other women reported being assaulted by a man with a similar description.

Each incident allegedly involved the suspect elbowing or shoulder-checking the victims while passing them on downtown sidewalks – in some cases knocking them to the ground.

The VPD investigation led police to a 28-year-old man, who was arrested March 5 by investigators from VPD’s Special Investigation Section, with assistance from patrol officers in the downtown core.

Dylan Brandon Gaita has now been charged with four counts of assault that allegedly occurred between January 29, 2025, and January 31, 2026.

Screenshot 2026-03-11 09.48.35.png

“Unprovoked violence against strangers is an ongoing concern for everyone, and we know that sometimes these incidents are not immediately reported to police,” says Constable Megan Lui. “Although we’ve made an arrest in these cases, there may still be additional victims, witnesses, or people with information. That is why we’ve chosen to release the suspect’s photo, and ask anyone who has not yet come forward to contact police.”

Hmmmm....

Police Investigate Assault and Seek Witnesses

March 11, 2026 - File: #26-9049

Victoria, B.C. – Victoria Police Department (VicPD) officers responded to a disturbance at the intersection of Johnson Street and Broad Street on March 4, 2026, at approximately 8:10 p.m. following a 911 call where only yelling and screaming could be heard.

Preliminary investigative efforts on scene revealed an assault may have occurred, resulting in the arrest of one individual. A review of the area’s video surveillance confirms the incident occurred in a public space with multiple vehicles and bystanders present.

“This was a serious incident that occurred in a public place. Everyone deserves to feel safe and respected in our community,” says VicPD Detective Constable Joel Durling.

VicPD encourages anyone who witnessed the assault, or has information regarding the incident, to contact the E-Comm non-emergency line at 250-995-7654 ext. 1, and reference file number 26-9049.
